how cool..what do you do with it? sell it? make stuff?

Natalie, I spin it, blend it with other fibers, use it in my own work, sell it by the ounce. Truly it isn't a big profit business. I can get 6-10$ per ounce for uncut wool, if it's really good quality. It pays for the rabbit's food, dewormer, etc. But if I spin it or blend it, it can be more profitable but still not a big money making business. I just like having access to the high quality material to work with.

That being said, I am getting out of Angoras and looking to get into meat bunnies. They require little room, no grooming and could be useful to my family in an economic downturn. And they are easier to sell. while I have to keep the chickens in my father-in-law's yard, I can keep a quad of those in the backyard, even in our subdivision and no one will know because they don't make noise and we have a privacy fence. I keep thinking in this economy that folks are soon gonna have things in their backyards, even in this neighborhood.

I'm kind of a wanna-be homesteader but can't really do it where I live now...

Well, I did it. Went down and filled out the papers for support. Have an appt for the 15th to get everything rolling.

Nat, NYS law says that a child can't stay alone until they are 13, how stupid is that. I mean, I can see why it's a law, because some people are stupid, but it's very inconvenient when you just want to run down the block for milk or mail, whatever, and your kid has to stop what they are doing for a 5 min trip.

Nat,

I've never eaten an Angora. They are not good meat producers. I'm sure you could eat one... but they are rather bony. All their energy goes into that lovely wool. If you wanted to raise bunnies to eat, there are more economical breeds for that. Kind of like with chicks.

Here's my website: www.proverbs31hands.com .

You can click on the "Our Rabbitry" link and see some of my bunnies when they were younger. You can see Sarah's coat just before her first pulling on that page. She was very young in that pic, but she has great wool. Currently, my best bunny is Cilla, but her pic is not up there. I don't have pics of all our bunnies up there, and most have gone or are leaving ASAP to make room for the meat bunnies. Cilla will likely stay. Her wool is too fabulous to lose. And she makes enough to keep me supplied. If you are looking for a wooler, let me know and I can tell you what to look for.

I need to get the shop updated on the site. I just reopened it and it is in process, so there's not much to see there.

What breed of meat rabbit, blessed....? Just bought my son a California buck and a New Zealand doe....both were kinda wild at first because the breeder was just doing it for meat...son wants them as pets and will be finally joining 4H next school year and wants to start showing them. I don't even kill any of our chickens ...so I couldn't imagine killing the rabbits...but I am a wimp haha...

Well, it would have made more sense for him to just build the coops, I mean, he does own a construction co, and has alot of the materials right on hand. I don't know if he'll wish he'd built them or not. He'll definately be angry though. I can already hear the phone calls I'll be getting.

I am thinking Californian and French Lops. The lops are easy to sell for pets, too.

I don't plan on killing one unless I need to. But I can sell them for that. I don't kill chickens either. But if we were in a situation where my family needed it, it would be different.

I read too much economic news to think we may not be headed there in the next several years. Not trying to get political. Just sayin'. I'm kind of a "prepper."

Plus, I just like the idea of knowing that I am self-sufficient in some areas. Learning skills, the old ones, really appeals to me. I still plan on getting the menfolk around here to do the "deed" if it ever has to be done. I'm pretty much a wimp, too. LOL
