WOW!! What great development rates!! Do you do something special that you are willing to tell the rest of us?

I have been told that maybe my standards in all things are a bit high...I did not think this was all that great.

The barnies and the BLRW came from the same shipper so you can see they had a good trip.

Mine always do well because they do not have to go through shipping.

The cochins had the worst shipping experience know to man (by the PO not the sender) So having 3 survive is good. She was so great she sent new eggs for shipping $ - those are in bator #2 due to hatch next week.

The rest are hooveing around 50% which I understand is "good" for shipped eggs. The Welsummers had quite a few clear (nonfertile?) eggs. So I really think this depends on the many variables of eggs.

I have also found that once I got a few hatches under my belt I was better at ignoring them during incubation.

In closing...it is all a crap shoot...

Thank you. That was one of the positives that led me to choose this breed. I had 4 hatch last month and I believe I have 3 hens and a roo. time will tell if i judged right. It is hard to tell when it looks like eye liner only a "little smudgy". That is the one I think is the roo.

Same with the marans and sexing by leg color. It would be easier if they came out pink or blue!!!

I know what you are saying Aces,
I have had 2 fantastic hatches (MFC 16 /20 and 8/8 BLRW) and at the same time had 16 wheaten marans. 9 candled clear and 6 of the remaining 7 hatched. Bummer is they are absolutely ALL BOYS!!!!!!!!! unbelievable!!!
th.gif

At least 4 of BLRW are probable girls according to Hoppy

The current eggs are doing no better. Out of 28 BLRW about 8 maybe OK (rest clear/ED) and of about 16 GLW all but 7 are clear.
I wish there were more excellent breeders on the west coast.....Shipping is such a killer

One thing I did do was up the temp slightly. A "New" friend told me she swears by 100.5 and I have found that works really well for me. I keep the humidty around 40% those seem to work in the NE climates.

The only down side if you think it is - is that mine start pipping on day 19 because the temp is a bit higher.

I would share every tip I had with you - that is how I have learned thru you all here.

I have read that it is absolutly true. I just think it takes some exposure to judge for sure what the distict eyeliner looks like. Can not wait to see what this batch looks like and if it will get easier.
