I woke up to a dead chick this morning. One of the TSC babies that I think was probably a leghorn. But it was one of the few I have that I am sure are hens.

Now, out of 15 in the brooder, only 4 are sure hens. Surely I have more than that, but it's hard to tell with silkies, and 7 are silkies. That leaves 4 others, and I'm sure 2 of those are roos because they are Kristen's mixes and appear to have some barring starting to show up finally. It's not very distinct, but I'm thinking boys. And then I have Nat's two mixes, who so far, both are looking girly.

So is there a way to sex a silkie early??

How early? You can look at the line of feathers on the wing...usually if they are all about the same length= girl. Combs can sometimes let you and I have a friend that swears if the chicks are real young you grasp them by the head while they sit in your other hand. Slowly raise you hand until it dangles, if it goes sort of limp=girl, if fights to be down=boy. Of course a coin toss is sometimes just as accurate. Do you have pictures?

I have some Hebrew diet friends so I always ask.

I guess it would be ironic or just plain wrong to offer chicken but we can do the standard hamburgers, hot dogs, and I can do goat.

Edited to add: We will still be getting okra from the garden as well

You mean 2 and 6 are roos? Cause that's what I thought. And 3, too. I hope that's right. That means probably 4 girls at least, hopefully. Not too bad.

If I can figure out which one was three, I'll put a face shot up.

The important thing is you figured it out. So good for you and thank goodness that is all it was!

I agree and we all can confess to learning from our mistakes!! Great that you now know and will not make the same mistake twice.

I'm leaning to the face shot being a girl. Let me know how I did later when it becomes obvious.

Does anyone want an ankle biter white silkie roo? I have 4- 2 with bad attitude but frisky breeders and 2 younger ones that have to go. Some good breeder qualities in them but combs are off.

Okay. I hope it's right. But I'll let you know. What age can we tell for sure? When they crow? Thank you for taking the time to do this, either way. I so appreciate it.

2 roos and 5 hens on the 50/50 assorted bin at TSC is not bad. I've had worse results, lol.

Wish I could take one of your roos. I have too many as it is it seems, though. I know there are 4 probably at least in my brooder right now, and one in my pen outside. Somebody's gotta go.
