I think it was orpingtons are sexed by one sex is faster feathering then the other, not the wing feather sexing in that picture. if I remember right, and I will have to check because i don't breed orpingtons, I found it posted somewhere, that the hens feather faster then the males (ie: females will sprout tails sooner).
I check later tonight.

Hi everyone, sorry I haven't posted in a couple of days, it's been very eventful here.

Let me start with the good news, my broody hatched out her lone egg today, it's a silkie

and oh so very cute

My other broody is still in the same cage with them, sitting on her eggs.

Now for the bad news. I had to put down Jack yesterday. He wouldn't eat, obviously couldn't see, and was, well, retarded. He wanted to eat, would peck up into the air, instead of down. Nothing we tried could get him to figure out how to get to the food, not even putting the food right up to his beak. Tried mash, everything we could think of. All 4 of us tried, he just couldn't do it. Believe it or not, he could drink water with no problem

He was half the size of the rest of them at the end. I did it myself, and I swear I will never do it again. We hadn't told my son yet, he gets very upset when the chicks or chickens die for any reason. Then I really screwed up today. I asked him to feed the chicks in the brooder. Wasn't over there 3 seconds when out pops "where's Jack?". Crap! I wasn't thinking

. Oh how he cried, it was awful

And yesterday (yesterday was a bad day), mom decided she didn't want 2 more coops in the yard, so I had to go up to the amish guy and cancel the order and get our money back. I'm going to have to get rid of some (ok, quite a few) of my chickens now. I'll have to decide which breeds I want to keep, and if I want to keep any roosters, or just hens. If I'm going to want to breed them or not, etc.

Today, I found mites on the chickens, even though I dusted them last week, I think it was. Yuck

I swear I have the creepy crawlies.

So, that's been my life lately.

check out one of my babies- finally got a picture and posted it up- this is at 5 weeks old.

and here is the link to the sexing site for breeds like orpingtons, cochins, brahmas (says buff orpingtons but should work with other colors.) scroll down on the site for the full topic as some breeds are the opposite.

Wow Carrie... what a day... no fun at all and I'm sorry about Jack... I was heartbroken today when my WHITE "HEN" crowed at me... so guess what blessed? The guy was WRONG... the barred are not necessarily males... Ophelia is now called Mephistopheles... Mep for short.. .

Maine is out and ENGLAND IS BACK IN!!! The flights are back on schedule... we're packed... wish us luck! Natalie if anything DOES happen to us will you take my flock??? Only 26 chickens... tell your husband I'll throw in the food for free LOL.
