I don't think the eggs are very hardy. Out of 9 I got 2, gave them to Nava. Nava had multiple BLRW eggs from different members and did not do well either. Personally I think large mutts travel the best. I hope those SLB's ship well, LOL

Yeah, I've noticed that not many folks have much luck with the BLRW's on this thread. With all these experienced hatchers I would think it's probably something with the breed. The eggs came from too many places, to many different bators, etc. for me to think otherwise.

I think they are just very fragile.. If you read and look at breeders expweriences they do great-I mean I got mine sent to me from 2 different places and al arrived happy and healthy-haven't lost one-then I brought Kristen hers-ans I believe shes doing great too...So I think it's all in the traveling and jostling??? That is exactly why I bought birds so that when I want to incubate those eggs all I have to do is walk down to my girls ad pluck their eggs!

I find with the BLR, I set them and pretty much leave them alone. I don't candle but I do check heart rates (I have a doppler), I do this once, pull any without heartbeats at 2 weeks. of my own, I'm getting 100% hatch, of shipped eggs, greater then 80% (only one set is blr and they are due tomorrow so they don't count). I will say when I was starting my flock, I bought alot but didn't get many to hatch. I stopped buying off of ebay/ and another egg site. one thing about wyandottes in general, the rosecomb decreases fertility, straight combs increase it so that could be part of the problem. I used to freak when I saw single combs, now I don't.
wthchrist, could it be something like your incubator not having enough or too much humitiy at the end or being opened too often?
set them and forget them. I hope you last bunch are girls not boys.

OMG Hoppy! I never thought about using my doppler! That's brilliant! I have one from this last pregnancy(nothing real fancy). Does it work well? At what age can you actually hear their heartbeat?

Nava, sorry about your birds

Hoppy

what kind of eggs do you have besides BLRW??? I know you said you wanted to trade but I dont have any space to take them and I dont plan on incubating anymore this year:-( But Can you do a "rain check" for me?? I have split Lav silkie eggs--thats all the silkie eggs I have:)

Good Morning all! Happy Mom's Day!

With the BLRW to be honest, I was horrible at setting and forgetting. I thought that may have been the problem with them and the last batch of coronation (only got 2), so this time I only touched the twice through the incubation period and I am allowing myself one peak per day through hatch. (Soooooo hard). This morning I have 3 more coronation and 5 orps out- an AMAZING difference in hatch rates. The coronation eggs were from Keesmom again.

I learned my lesson- It is already hard on the eggs to ship to Seattle, so NO MORE TOUCHING THE EGGS THROUGH INCUBATION.

Hoppy- Your eggs were great, I am the one who screwed it up. Every hatch I am getting better though.

Thank you for the Foley's contact. I am just going to order some chicks- I think it will cost me less in the long run.
