It seems to me that I will have another full bator for the next hatch!!! I, too, am getting more eggs from Sundown (thanks Nat)....

I am so totally sad! The predator got my babies that hatched in January. I am starting to think maybe I'm not supposed to have chickens! We redid our coop. We put wire three inches INTO the ground around it. We redid the hawk netting. We made extra ties in the netting every few inches so nothing larger than a small mouse could get in we, thought. We lined the edges with cement blocks. We did everything we could think of. Our roo was fine for a whole week. No signs of predators after the first night we put the fence in the ground and he tried to dig in, found out it was no longer possible and left. I put the babies out with the roo, in their brooder for the first night. Then I turned them out with him the next day. He was great with them, already guarding them, even from me, which we were going to have to work on a bit. Seriously, my chickens have been in the same area for a year now and we've never had a problem til the last two weeks. What am I doing wrong???? I can't not think of any other way to make this coop more secure.

And I am pretty sure it was a coon this time as they tore my net and left me a big ole pile of crap on the the low part of the coop roof, right where I have to stick my hand to open it. I looked it up online. Looks like coon crap! If I ever spot that thing, and I'm headed out to look in just a bit, I'm gonna blast him to smithereens with the shotgun. There's probably more where he came from.

Anybody wanna join me for a coon killing??? Maybe a coyote and a weasel or two, too. Neighbor's cat better watch it, cause if it moves tonight, I'm shootin' it.

Edited to add: My stinkin' roo ain't got a scratch on him. Defended those babies from me and acted like he was gonna flog me and let the predator in. Argh!!!
