I band mine by year. each yr has a different color and if I wanted to track certain lines, you can put on 2 bands. you could also use one leg vs the other to mean something if you can only get one color band. I bought mine off ebay.

Hi All,

I haven't read this entire thread...just came on here and boy is it long!

But, I was curious about the BLRWs hatchability when shipped. My eggs have virtually 100% fertility when I set them here. And, a BYCer who lives only about half an hour from me contacted me, bought a dozen BLRW eggs, picked them up herself, and hatched out 8 (2 with no growth, 1 quit before day 10, and 1 died before pipping). I didn't hear back from most of the people who purchased shipped BLRW eggs from me, but the ones that did contact me didn't get good hatches. Now, I know shipping is hard on them, but I would have expected someone to get a good hatch somewhere along the way! I think I packaged them well and didn't get reports of breakage. Anyone have any feedback on this?

Hey Gretchen, we were just talking about this on this thread -how we have not heard of a good hatching rate with BLRW eggs-None of us on here anyway...Ive gone from 27 BLRW to 5 ( Fay's eggs) for lockdown is Sat for me. Maybe they have weaker air cells? or just cannot handle shipping well due to fertility issues that they talk about. I honestly don't know...I wish I did. I just know they are gorgeous and I want some ...LOL

They were all wrapped in bubble wrap and shipped during perfect weather in 2 days door to door. Air cells seemed fine. By day 10, I had lost 14 and it just got worse from there!

And on top of that, 2/3 were roos!

Hmmmm. Interesting. Thanks for the feedback, Natalie. I haven't experienced any fertility issues with them at all, nor seen any mention of it before. Where did you get that info? I'd like to check it out.

I think I'd better make certain I have lot of BLRW eggs to bring to the chickenstock with me, eh? Or better yet, lots of chicks.

From what I read ( which I've been really researching this breed for the last few weeks) it is a breed that has very low fertility rates due to the rose combs and it is best to leave a single combed roo in the breeding pen to assure fertility accross the board. The single comb is not recognized for this breed but will help with the low fertility rates-especially if you have all rose combed roos in with the girls...Umm maybe try a search on BLRW fertility issues on here-Ive read about it on here alot and other search engines..hmmm let me look.
