OMG OMG OMG! Today has been the best day!!! Hubby and I took the morning off work because there was a fleamarket in town and a few garage sales we wanted to go to. Well we found tons of good deals on things at the fleamarket, including some decorations for my coop like a iron door knocker that is a rooster, and I found my mom a Cricket Die cut machine for $50, never used! At walmart they are $185! Then we went to the lumber store and I was shocked to find that T1-11 that 10 years ago was $10 a sheet is now over $30 a sheet

. So I asked about Plywood, the cheap stuff that is pressed and glued together is $22 bucks and Sheet! And I just can't justify spending $100 on siding for my little 8x4 coop, so I just bought the 2x4's to finish up the frame for now. Well the guy loading the wood into our car was talking to my husband about our coop, and then starts talking to me about chickens. Turns out he has a small flock of RIR's, and asks if I am looking to buy an incubator, so I ask what kind and how much, he says "I'm not sure of the brand but its big like a cabinet

, and he would have to talk to his wife about price, then he says it also has a separate hatcher the same size

" , so by now I am

, so I take his number and name, and will call him tomorrow to find out the price. Now this whole time we were telling him how we just don't have the money to spend $100 on plywood for this coop, and how we are doing a little at a time to be able to afford it all, so he knows we don't have a lot to spend, so hopefully he will take that into consideration when deciding a price.

Now it get's even better! Hubby asks if he knows anybody getting rid of scrap plywood that we could use for our coop, and the guy says
"Actually, I have several sheets that come in on top of the bundles of plywood that are used to protect the selling plywood, they aren't the best quality, you know, may have some scratches and dings, as well as have spray paint on them, you could have some of that, I put it aside for non profits when they need it"

. So he takes us back to look at it, it looks just as good as the plywood they are selling!

So we tell him yah, we have to finish changing the brakes on our truck today, but we will be in tomorrow to pick up a few sheets! I Am soooo excited!

I literally shreked when I saw the price. less see about $83/egg and 1/2 being roosters......I bet someone sure is doing the happy dance. well, got to get ready for obedience class (not me, the dog!)

Well I think My hatch may be done, but I'll leave the 4 remaining eggs for now. I now have 4 beautiful babies! Would have had five if that one hadn't suffocated

. But I am moving on and hoping I have 3 Hens and a Roo, that way I can keep them all! So from Katy's stock I an expect to get Blue, Splash or Black right? I'll get pics when I take them out of the bator tonight.

Talk about shock! That's an incredible price, no wait that's unreal. But just think, the next auction of them, well they will probably go less expensive and that will surely make me roll on the floor laughing. (the BLB's)

to both of you. Don't beat yourself up, accidents sometimes just happen. It is sad, but it was just a very unfortunate accident.

So sorry guys. Stuff like that happens to all of us and it feels dreadful because we care, and think it is out fault. But just think of all the ones you have saved and have to love.

I had a raccoon attack yesterday. I was planning on moving Hoppy's splash BLRWs to their long-term outdoor pen at the weekend. Wish I had done it earlier, but they were still in a smaller cage as they were still being taken inside in the evenings. This smaller cage has slightly wider wiring. Darn raccoon ripped a wing off one, and a wing tip of another. I had to euthanise the one that was badly hurt. The other is OK. At least the one that died I think was a boy.

As for the double pipper. This egg was 2 days pipped and not progressing. The chick was not shrink wrapped but seemed tired. I think it had been turning in the shell and was exhausted. Also it was a bit slimy/smelly. Anyways, I cracked the shell a bit more for it. It was totally in the wrong position, but worse most of the yolk sac was external. I tried to push the sac in but it was crying too much. I think I may try to tie off the extra sac and pop a suture in to close the hole in the abdomen if it is still alive after the kids go to bed. Will probably have to cull though because the chick is just not "right in any way. Just feel it should have a chance. Sort of hoping it won't come to that though. I have a collection of chicks that really should never have been saved.
DH is complaining about me hatching more chicks. Only intermittently realizes that is is real therapy for us hatchers. I did sell a bunch of chicks - BLRW and Mille fleur D'uccle. I let them go REAL cheap to keep numbers down (and DH happy), and I am sure this guy will be back for more. He seemed really nice and he knew he was getting very nice birds.
