yeah, I gotta check out any birds I am thinking about getting outside of my projects(don't see much call for NN ameraucana) for laying, since that is the flock they would be with... I should just add them to my next year bator list, I *think* I have too many chicks right now

That way dh sees them as chicks and thinks they are cute too before they get big...

I think yours eggs should be OK. I am always amazed at how robust they are (unless you REALLY REALLY want them of course!!!)
The chick is a layer cross from Nat, so not a "heavy" breed. Having said that this guy likes to eat!!! and I think is a guy. It seems that Hoppy "specializes" in hopping birds and they do OK.

Phage-your braver than I. I would not take any birds back-only because of biosecurity risks-unless they had never had birds before and such. I have gotten to the point where I will keep any bird as long as it can fend for itself-can it eat and drink?? Can it get to where it needs to go without assistance and without harming itself even more? If the answer is yes it's a keeper but if it gets worse and starts to decline-I put them down for both our sakes:-( I remember that cross beak chick-I still have mine shes so cute:) and 5 months old now??? no eggs yet either.

Nat,
These guys were totally new to chickens so the biosafety issue was OK.
Due to bobcats+++, raccoons and hawks I have to keep all the birds penned up at all times. This guy is Ok in a cage but would be taken in a flash if put out. I am limited on space and if it is a boy (likely) I can't keep it anyway. He/she is very sweet which makes it harder to be logical

I hate that circumstance. I put 4 roos down today.. I wasnt attached to 3 of them so it wasnt that hard but the last one broke my heart because I hatched him and have had him well over a year-he got hurt pretty bad from his girls and he was not getting better:-( Im sorry Phage-you got jinxed 2x by my eggs!

well, I guess it was bound to happen with all these chicks. One of my wheaten ameraucana can't walk. At first I thought it was a foot issue but upon further inspection I realized it's hip is the issue. Can't walk and sleeps all the time. It is only 2 days old so I may see if it improves. I thought about splinting it but can't figure out a way. *sigh* I hate this as I usually have dh cull for me cuz I don't have the guts

Nat,
You can't be responsible for some raccoon attack!!! Sheesh!!!
I LOVE your chicks as do everyone else

. They are the friendliest bunch of squirts ever. That comes from good gene selection for good temper. That is why you want to replace your lav roo ASAP. IMHO to enjoy chooks as a hobby, personality is by far the most rewarding character. What makes this hard is that it is one of your babies!!

phage, there was a good article in backyard poultry a few months back on how to use a sling on a leg. it showed them having the chicken (this one was a few months old) in a baby onies, suspended between 2 chairs and they use a weight on the leg to help stretch out the tendons. they did this a few times/day. I also found this:
