Well, looks like 9 out of 14 is what is going to hatch out of gump's eggs. I opened the others and they were dead and sticky. I must really have humidity problems, but I didn't add any water except the last 3 days.

Mary, could you look at the chick pics and tell me if you think the light ones are splash or blue? For some reason I thought blue would be darker, but I'm frequently wrong.

Also 3 out of 4 remaining hoppy eggs hatched last night

, but 2 chicks seem very weak

. Hopefully they are just really tired from hatching and will buck up here in a while. The other egg is full of chick but yet to pip. Please send hatching thoughts its way!

Brindle, the thing with blue is it comes in so many shades sometimes it's hard to tell

I still have a hard time with my ameraucana sometimes....

Ok, I need to be talked down. I was going to buy some button quail eggs. Not sure what I would do with them, not sure what they are even good for, but they sure are cute. What good are button quail?

easy easy....step away from the edge........I think button quail are cage birds to be admired for their beauty, so unless you have an aviary to keep them in I don't know what you would do with them.........easy.....easy............ take a deep breath..........do you need them........probably not......easy...

Maybe like mine, your humidity is too low, not too high. I have always done dry hatch, with good results. This year, apparently only a higher humidity works. I'm thinking the light grey will be your splashes, and the dark will be blues. Remember that GG doesn't have black, only splash and blue. I hope your little ones perk up, it's even worse to lose them after they hatch imo.

My second baby is out, and now under my broody. She's doing really well with them so far. It's so cute. The third is just hanging out. I'm not worried, it was the last to pip. Well, have to get ready to go, I'll talk with you all tomorrow or monday.

Hey Cindy....IMO, the lighter could be splash...Sending good hatches vibes your way for the stragglers....

If you have any type of caged bird....button quail can live with them....they are small...flighty....

Last 5 orps were dead in their shells

. Sticky.

2 BLRW are up and about and the 3rd is out but not really about, yet. Looks exhausted.

I put the 9 little orps in with the ameraucanas and silkies and the older ones all ran into the corner to hide! Little orps are just cruising around like they own the place.

Oh, yeah, we have 5 pullets and 4 cockerals. I haven't sexed the BLRW, yet

I also had to drop the dry incubating this year.....I think that is why I had so many upside down chicks too, not enough moisture to move freely

. I have been having better hatch rates since I upped my humidity.

As far as the quail go, thanks brindle, I did sign up to do a few test eggs(before I posted) but I will not be purchasing any, probably end up giving the ones I hatch(if any) away.

Also, my orp eggs from Imogene got here today

so it seems I will be a few days behind, would love to know how everyone else do

I thought sticky chicks were caused by too much humidity?????
hu.gif
Shoot, in Houston most of the year humidity is probably 40% anyway. Maybe they don't need added water?

Not sticky as in too dry but sticky as in too much stuff still in the shell. I guess its egg white.

I've been using 30-37% then 70-75% in lockdown, and I've had all clean hatches. And I think that because the eggs we get are from chickens that are bred to be larger, and don't we all work to get those nice strong shells? Well, I think that those strong shells are harder to break, and don't xchange oxygen as well. I just hatched some eggs from ultra healthy chickens and I think they all had a harder time getting out. Especially the last one, I think she would have died of exhaustion if not helped. She pooped in her shell which tells me stress in some way. All that great food, extra calcium, vitamins, breeding bigger and bigger, feeding for stronger shells has come back to bite us in the butt.

Brindle, how heartbreaking.

I can't believe I had a few upside down chicks, and it coincided with getting an r-com with the turner that rolls the eggs, and the eggs are laid flat in there. This time for lockdown I positioned them with the big side up, and it was fine again.
