Stop showing off those beautiful flowers, Brindle!!!!!!!

Just kidding, more more more! And thanks for lableing them. Hmmm. Crinum lily. That name is somewhere in my past........I have to think about it. I am a day lily person thru and thru, and roses too. I used to have perinneals up the wazoo in NY. But they don't seem to like Florida. I'm not saying they won't grow, they just don't go ballistic like in NY. Except 2 rose bushes that I never touch, they won't stop blooming!

Ace, do you have a splash anything? Maybe it is a cochin mix?

In that pen I have 2 deleware hens, 1 black cochin, 1 buff cochin, 1 BCM, 1 SLW, 1 GLW, 1 EE, 1 WCBlack Polish. One Giant Black roo. The only mix that I can even fathom would make a blue babie would be the 2 blacks...??

wouldn't the black cochin hen with the giant black roo somehow make blue--I always forget that darn chart! Black is dominant but if they both carry the blue gene its possible???

That is what i was wondering. Big Medicine thought only if they were split to lav...? I thought if they both carried a recessive blue gene it could happen...??

OK I must update on my call duck baby-now remember she was due before I left for chickenstock and never hatched but I left the eggs under the broody anyway...while I was gone DD told me she checked and there was a really ROTTEN egg under her that was broke open so she cleaned it out-I figured all chicks were goners:-( Mind you I THOUGHT all I had left under her was 4 splash amaracana eggs. When i returned late at night from CS. I pulled all eggs out as they stunk to high heaven...I cracked each one open "just in case" and low and behold the call duck had pipped internally. I ran it up to the house and turned the brooder light on to heat it up-bator was already put away...I helped the poor baby out as it was already 5 days late. It was so small and weak. yolk hadnt been absorbed fully-took all night but it finally absorbed all yolk-but wow I seriously thought it had neurologcal problems as it has no strength to lift any part of its body it just peeped and peeped for 2 days-I hand fed it and watered it the whole time-I was going to put her down yesterday but I decided to feed it vitamin drops and force feed it a little. I wake up this am to find her sitting-barely. So I got wet food and water and helped her eat and drink-which she tried so hard and ate a little. By this afternoon she was able to lift her head all by herself and eat and drink with a tiny bit of supported help-her little webbed feet are weak too but darn it if shes not trying. Dh even came home at lunch and fed and watered her and he just got home and checked on her first thing. he was so happy to see her eating sitting up with a little support. I cant wait to see how she will be in the next few days. I did notice she has tiny wings and she doesnt use them for balance at all. She has flapped the little things once or twice but I think they need to catch up to help her balance on her own...she is so precious and we named her courage:-) she loves being held and thats awesome for a call duck! I just hope she gets into a normal type life and the other 2 call duck babies ( 2 I got from CS) will accept her and be nice or I think I have a house duck on my hands! LOL

Black is not dominant in this case. If you have one copy of the blue gene you get a blue, two a splash. So black cochins do not carry a recessive blue gene. If it was there, they would be blue. It is an incomplete dominant.

Lavender or self-blue is different. It is a recessive gene. If a black carries one gene they are still black carrying the recessive. two copies of the lavender gene turns a black to lavender or self-blue. A true dominant/ recessive pattern. Hope this makes sense. I'm new to chicks, but I LOVE genetics. dak

Nat I am so glad you're giving her a chance. My little mama picked on babies eye is still a little swollen, still sore when I touch him, but over all he's doing great!! They are getting along with the polish and the little lavender ameraucana wraps her wings around the babies to sleep with them at night. Unfortunately I did lose one while I was gone, Myrna apparently picked it to death and then buried it under the other eggs that little twit. So I had one pipping. I took all of the eggs and put them in the bator. So far one hatched of those. I have 3 hatched of 8, 2 deceased and 3 eggs left in the bator. We'll see... Mom has e-mycin eye ointment, might try that on my little booner and see if I can get that eye to soften and loosen up. Myrna will NEVER be allowed to have eggs again. AND I have an egg eater... and it's my alpha

Crinums will take generally at least 5 years to bloom from seed. If you cater to it by feeding and watering it A LOT it may bloom in 4. Crinums are very long lived and with the exception of a few of the small sized plants that multiply quickly, wait to attain a certain size before sending up a bloom stalk.

Offsets generally bloom faster than seeds, I'm afraid. I have a giant crinum that was started from seed and have had it more than 5 years and it is still pretty small, but isn't in a good location. Crinums resent being moved once established and can take up to 3 years to settle in once relocated. Also, various cultivars do not bloom well. I had a dwarf crinum that offset like crazy and made a huge clump and only sent up 1 bloom stalk in several years. I dug it up and trashed it as a waste of time and effort. Unless you are a true crinum afficianado or a breeder its best to stick with the tried and true faster growing and blooming varieties like Ellen Bosenquet or Mrs. James Hendry.

The giant red Crinum Splendens you may have seen in a couple of photos was taller than 5' before it sent up a bloom.

To put this a little more in perspective, an amaryllis will bloom for the first time between 2 and 5 years.

Do you know what color bloom the parent plant had?
