Electric fence is still the way to go. It's pretty easy. Go to American Livestock Supply on line or Tractor supply. They have the parts. You need the machine, electric poly wire and the plastic guides you nail to wood to guide the electric wire thru, comes with the nails. From HD or Lowe's, you need about 25 feet of real thick galvanized "wire", thicker than a toothpick, and 3- 8 foot metal rods, like rebar, and 3 clamps

Have hubby hammer in the rods into the ground 8 feet apart, 3 of them in a line. Leave about 8 inches above the ground. That's it for him. Now you. Hang the machine in a waterproof box or something. I nail the machine to the side of a shed near an outlet. Connect the thick wire, it will go from a wing nut on the machine, to each rod, and secured with the clamps holding it against each rod. Done with that. That's your ground,

Now put your plastic guides up. Should nail on posts or something, I've even run it around the windows. Run poly wire thru the guides and secure on the machine with the wingnut for it. The wire does not have to return to the machine, you can just end it. Turn it on. The meter on the machine should tell you if it's working well. The shock wire should not touch anything but the plastic guides.

If something touches the wire while being in contact while standing on the ground, the animal completes the circuit: electric from the machine goes thru the wire, goes thru the animal, goes into the ground, picked up by the rods, and back to the machine.

If you can hammer nails, use a wrench to tighten clamps, and cut a wire, you can do this without hubby, after he hammers the rods in (need a ladder). I've done this 3 times in 20 years. If you want, I can go to a website and put a list together of what you need. If it can deter cows and horses and dogs, it will certainly deter a racoon.

Thanks sem.

I really have no qualms about rehoming. And I really do understand that extra roos around my house must be placed quickly, because I can't have roos. I have given many roos to the feedstore, where people buy them to breed with, which they should because they are mostly nice roos, or to eat, which is the fate of most roos. It is tough being a roo, and I have pretty much come to terms with that.

For some reason, it just got to me yesterday. I was giving this person fabulous chickens I have taken a lot of time and expense over and saved just for her. She cannot possibly deal with the small chance one might be a roo and then quite readily and selfishly takes my lovely pullets and I was too much of a wiener to put my foot down until she really pushed it over the blue orp. She even said 'Your mad at me now, aren't you?' All I said was I could understand not wanting to deal with a roo.

She left immensely satisfied (as she should have been) and I was left feeling like a complete butthead because I didn't say 'too bad so sad you don't want your chickens that I kept just for you, I guess I'll just keep them and you can ask some one else to give you beautiful chickens.' Because she did ask me for them months ago, I didn't offer. I even kept them longer than I would have normally, because she went on a month long vacation, and then she didn't have her coop built, yet. I feel she pushed the envelope of our friendship, deliberately took advantage of me and behaved selfishly and I am disappointed in her. I went way out of my way to accommodate her. And I am disappointed in me for letting her do it. Tut tut. All over chickens. Live and learn. Hmph.

AND HIDE the ones you will keep!

To those curiuos partners in crime! I don't have a new chick, just the one who is sooo cute. Was peeping up a storm this morning. Looked like she was wanting food and water. One of the moms took some crumbles and put them down for the baby. I had to grind them up, make them small for her.

However, I have a PIP!!!!!!! I'm waiting patiently........................

Nat. I really have to hand it to you and praise you for all the work you are doing for this swap of yours. I've been reading your swap thread, and you have put an immense amount of work into this! I'm soooo wishing you alot of success and take pics.

I missed something? What did I miss?

Phage needs double yolkers!! research !!!! So anything that looks promising I put in the bator and send to her when partially developed. Too much fun! I do have one that isn't a twin and my soft heart does not allow me to cull it. It is out of my best layer so I'll probably have a lonely chick of my own soon. No trauma!!!

The two Brahma chicks are bruisers! One looks to be the proper color (BLB), but I have questions about the other. Time will tell. I'll take pics when my hubby gets back with the camara.

Don't feel bad Brindle, I can't even give away Golden laced Cochins as pairs. I'm a bit disgusted. I think I'll just keep the girls and all my beautiful fluffy boys will have to be culled.

Hi, need advice. Little silkie pipped this morning, I can see beak. This afternoon, the 3 moms left with the chick and went down the ramp into their little fenced area. It seems they were there for a while, baby was really thirsty. Seems that there was no way for baby to get back in the coop so the 3 moms stayed out. So the pipped egg sat there, I would say 90 degrees and 55% humidity. Should I help?

Ouch, hard call on that one. I'll defer to those that hatch with broodies since I haven't ever had a successful broody hatching.

Silkies are great moms and broodies, but not the sharpest nail in the toolbox. More like the wood dowel.

I would, but I've had better luck helping than not. I would think if it has been pipped that long, it would be mature enough if you pop the top.
