I'm sorry brin, I hate being taken advantage of but alot of times I set myself up. I have since learned with the chickens, when I have some to leave (for sale or otherwise) I put them totally separate from my other birds. once the person has decided that these birds are for them and paid, I might show them the others. many times mine are free ranging so they may not see them anyway but this way, I've never hade anyone change their mind about the ones they are taking, they just want more of what I have . I had one lady 2 weeks ago, came and bought my blr roo and some other spares including a black copper marans cockeral. she so wanted my marans pullet but it was the only one I had and the wheatons I bought turned out to be boys (rehomed already). so the guy I got the boy pullet wheatons from got out of birds including all his wheatons and bc. I offered 2 of the bc to this lady and she didn't want them since they were not feather legged and were not the same breed. (I explained they were) oh well, so I have extra bc hens running around and a coop full for winter, seriously need to make some space.
I'm keeping 8 blr over the winter and with marans, americanas, silkies and 2 white wyandottes - I will have too many eggs come spring- hoping for good auctions.
some how didn't get very many boys and only have 1blr cockeral- had hoped for 2 going into winter, oh well.

Thanks sem.

I really have no qualms about rehoming. And I really do understand that extra roos around my house must be placed quickly, because I can't have roos. I have given many roos to the feedstore, where people buy them to breed with, which they should because they are mostly nice roos, or to eat, which is the fate of most roos. It is tough being a roo, and I have pretty much come to terms with that.

For some reason, it just got to me yesterday. I was giving this person fabulous chickens I have taken a lot of time and expense over and saved just for her. She cannot possibly deal with the small chance one might be a roo and then quite readily and selfishly takes my lovely pullets and I was too much of a wiener to put my foot down until she really pushed it over the blue orp. She even said 'Your mad at me now, aren't you?' All I said was I could understand not wanting to deal with a roo.

She left immensely satisfied (as she should have been) and I was left feeling like a complete butthead because I didn't say 'too bad so sad you don't want your chickens that I kept just for you, I guess I'll just keep them and you can ask some one else to give you beautiful chickens.' Because she did ask me for them months ago, I didn't offer. I even kept them longer than I would have normally, because she went on a month long vacation, and then she didn't have her coop built, yet. I feel she pushed the envelope of our friendship, deliberately took advantage of me and behaved selfishly and I am disappointed in her. I went way out of my way to accommodate her. And I am disappointed in me for letting her do it. Tut tut. All over chickens. Live and learn. Hmph.

Crap Brindle...I dont think I have ever asked anyone for a chicken--I always bought them-mostly just eggs to incubate though:) what a dipstick she was and yes I thinkit was terribly rude of her-you should have charged her up the butt people dont realize that POL birds are expensive You know darn well they have cost at least 15$ to get to that point if not 2-3x that amount depending on breed! Next time you'll know better and throw your titanium girl panties on first LOL

aww thanks Sem.. I keep staring down at the property where evrything will take place--I keep thinking gosh this is sooo going to be a last minute set-up-I mean I cant put things out ahead of time for fear the weather wil ruin things so It will all get put out Friday/Sat:) the chickens and food are going to be outstanding-yummy! great bunch of people coming too-I hope it turns out as good as we are all hoping for hahaha.. Im pretty picky about planning things. This is exactly why I dont do big things very often because I am a nut job and go all out as much as I can...Hey I only intend on doing this once for the next year or two since Lovins will have her farm and do the next one! haha Ihave a feeling though if one goes down in jersey or further Lovins and I will be road hopping again:)

Dak you cant sell those breeding pairs? gosh why do we all have to be so dang far away from eachother??? Do you realize we could solve all our problems if we lived close??? I could process out all the extra roos for everyone-and we could all divide up pullets:) hahaha It amazes me how people are with peoples birds. the one lady I gave a WICKED deal too on 8 week old birds 7$ a bird these were bantam frizzled from Gretchen-silkies from mmm cant remeber now but gorgeous and I actually want them back! haha but she saw my girls free ranging and started to pick them out to buy! I said um no those arent for sale..She was like why?? I said becuase they were my pets and not for sale.. She said come on you really couldnt even tell wich ones would be missing -I said I bet you 100$ That if you had me turn my back and take a pullet and hide her in your car-that at bedtime I could tell you exactly whos missing and her name so no they are not for sale...people!!!

I'd have tried putting one hen in the nest, with a couple extra eggs if that was the only egg to convince her to be broody a little more. Some silkies are very out of sight, out of mind... if the first one refuses, try the next hen.. Do check sometime later to see if she has quit the nest eventually or if all hens came back in and left chick outside.. very common with silkies either way. Eggs seem to do real well under hens, seems they give the chick a strong will to survive.. if the chick has not made any progress after a hour or 2, might be stuck.
