Just popping in to say hi. Had to do my first cull yesterday. I hated it. But my little yellow chick that couldn't walk was getting worse no matter what I did. So I did it.

Got lots of spinning and dyeing to do today so I'll be popping in and out.

Hope y'all have a wonderful day!

There is a thread on here somewhere about how incorrect most thermometers are and a brinsea thermometer is recommended and another one that I can't remember. It was a thermometer used in research labs, I think. I got a digital thermometer from Walmart and compared it to the one that I got from brinsea and there was a 2 degree difference. That is a big difference when you are talking eggs. Most thermometers are not really very accurate because they don't have to be - they will give you a ballpark figure and that is about it. Most folks don't need to know the temp as accurately as somebody hatching eggs. I junked my digital Walmart thermometer.

Sorry you had to cull. I had to cull one of my d'uccle chicks because it's vent was malformed. Culling is an awful but necessary thing. You have such a kind heart and I'm sure the chick is better off.

blessed, do ya'll have your own sheep? Where do you get the raw wool from? You may have said, but I have forgotten. When you dye do you do it before or after you spin it? How do you dry it?

Brindle, we don't have sheep. We do have angora rabbits. But I mostly spin merino and blue faced leicester. I will hand card the wools to add the angora from time to time, or sometimes I spin angora alone in small skeins and people use it for glove/hat trim, etc. I purchase everything except the angora from different suppliers. It is already cleaned when I get. You can purchase raw fleeces but I don't care to do all the work and deal with the smells of cleaning them... If I had my own sheep, I'd gladly do it.

Sometimes I dye roving and then spin it. Sometimes I spin then dye the yarn. Sometimes I hand paint the roving before spinning or the yarn after spinning. It just depends on my mood and what I see in my minds eye when I am working.

I hang the yarn outside to dry. I do not weight it as some spinners do because it seems to take away from the loft of the yarn and I also like the non-uniform, handspun look that looks like "dreds". If I am spinning a very uniform yarn, as I am doing more now, I am working on balancing the twist without having to weight the yarn. A weighted yarn (hung weight) is great for weaving though. Knitters, crocheters usually want the loft.

Do you knit/crochet/weave or spin?

My turkey eggs arrived! None are cracked and they were packed very nicely. However, all the air cells are loose and most are completely detached. Darn post office. Did they play football with my eggs??? There is no sense in this!!!

I am still going to attempt to hatch them. I know others have had success with detached cells. I never have, but it can't hurt trying. There are two with loose cells, 5 that appear to be detached with bubbles floating around. I'll let them rest until tomorrow and hopefully they will stabilize before I begin incubating.

Oh, carrie has a better idea!

Jen I crochet:-) Not very well but well enough to get my 11 yr old DD into it-shes made hats for gifts and such:-)

2 days no smoking! I have to tell you though I went to the back deck and saw the ashtray and a long butt stared at me saying SMOKE me! I walked away and went to check on how many silkie laid today:-) Those chickens will be sick of me by Summer! Oh got an email might be getting our BLRW chicks from Foley's earlier than the last date! That makes them 3 weeks eralier than originally expected-I just cant wait to go into Fall with Mature birds and no chicks.

COngrats everyone on the precious chicks! We are going to be very busy next weekend with all the hatches due then!!!! anymore updates I can fix?? I home cause 11 yr cannot be home all day by herself. You know if we lived in town I would probably but we live in the middle of no where and can be kinda scary with the woods around...SO I came home an hour or so ago-trying to catch up on all the pms and threads:-)
