To all of you on here that I know are moms... Happy Mothers Day! I myself am a mother.. people tell me this all the time infact they scream it at me when I drive... "You Mother BLEEEEEEEEEEEEEP"
Speaking of being a mother, as a chick mom I have decided to severely limit my hatching next year. The whole having to give up MY babies to someone else kills me even though I found them a good home.

Blessed- Chickens and poultry in general are DEFINATELY a learning experience. I lost 3 beautiful bantams over the winter before figuring out it was mites. My girls last year didn't lay until 30 weeks... why? Because I had NO idea to give them grower, left them on starter and stunted them... oops...

KLF- cute baby!

As for hatching BLRW's? I spent about $300 in eggs... that is an astronomical amount... how many chicks do I have??? 5... 5 chicks... all are healthy thank god and little Dotte (whom I should update a pic of her) is still continuing to thrive. Shipped BLRW eggs seem to really not do well ofcourse compound that with the whole USPS Soccer Tournament. I will hatch some of mine here keep some then sell started birds. I am praying that I have my new land by then.

I find with the BLR, I set them and pretty much leave them alone. I don't candle but I do check heart rates (I have a doppler), I do this once, pull any without heartbeats at 2 weeks. of my own, I'm getting 100% hatch, of shipped eggs, greater then 80% (only one set is blr and they are due tomorrow so they don't count). I will say when I was starting my flock, I bought alot but didn't get many to hatch. I stopped buying off of ebay/ and another egg site. one thing about wyandottes in general, the rosecomb decreases fertility, straight combs increase it so that could be part of the problem. I used to freak when I saw single combs, now I don't.
wthchrist, could it be something like your incubator not having enough or too much humitiy at the end or being opened too often?
set them and forget them. I hope you last bunch are girls not boys.

OMG Hoppy! I never thought about using my doppler! That's brilliant! I have one from this last pregnancy(nothing real fancy). Does it work well? At what age can you actually hear their heartbeat?

Nava, sorry about your birds

normally I wait until they are 10 days along before checking them- by 14 days, they should be developed enough to check heart rates. I check just below the fat end of the egg, half way to the middle, sometimes have to roll the egg over and it's there is any doubt, I put it back to incubate another few days before tossing it out. when they are ready to hatch, this doesn't work probably because the chick is too large to get a reading (at least with mine).

It is why I will never get dark tinted windows on my car. Those folks have to roll their windows down so they can make sure I can see them give me the finger! Too much trouble!

dang it! now I have to get a towel and wash the laptop off from my spit! you guys are cracking me up!

((hands Nat a towel))

I brought the 4 week old BLRW's inside in a cat carrier last night to sleep. I didn't trust them with just the heat lamp. This bad weather has to STOP. I couldn't even sleep in as they started chirping at the backsidecrack of dawn

AND I already have the brooder of BLRW's from sterling and foley in the other brooder in my room. I am surrounded by chickens! and I love it...

Oh well... I should be doing the last of my homework but BYC is much more fun.

I don't have anything but the BLR, you must have heard about the weasel that killed my flock except for these 3.
I will have my laying flock which are marans, americanas crossed with dottie rooster and I have a cute frizzled silkie but it's going to be pretty lonely if I can't get a friend for it.
