Since I teach, whenever I compete I tell my students to "go out there and beat my butt"! And always congratulate anybody who does.

Well, I' ve been outside all day putting up netting to keep the hawks from getting my babies. I lost a splash Orp a few weeks ago, and now a little Mottled Cochin. So now they are netted all around (electric netting-love it), and all above. I have some pretty expensive babies going outside soon, ( lots of eggs, very few hatchlings), so I couldn't stand to lose any. I wonder- would it be wrong to raise a bunch of rabbits to release to feed the hawks,so they'd leave my chickens alone, or would it just draw more hawks? Also, is that just too cruel? I would do just about anything to protect my chickens.

I have 6 Buff-laced Polish(out of 24 eggs, and 6 Silkie/ Showgirl. 2 are Showgirls- 1 homozygous, 1 hetero. I think they are both Paridge. They are not quite fluffed out yet, I promise pictures tomorrow after work. There are a couple Silkies I am wondering what the color is..........

Here's a link to the netting I have. I have 2 fences and a charger that will power 9 of them. It's supposed to keep even BEARS away (from beehives). Nothing has ever gotten any of my chicks except for hawks. Now hopefully, they are taken care of as well.

I got the netting before I even got 1 chicken. Too much heart-break years ago, when everything got them from the family dogs to coyotes to racoon and mink.

LOVE, love, love the netting. Wouldn't have chickens without it.

That netting looks like a really great idea!

I haven't heard from Mary.

You know, I think last time I saw her she mentioned something about a sick relative that needed a heart operation. I hope the relative is doing OK, too, and that isn't why she hasn't been on.

What do you mean ? An electric fence with wire for horses? When I had chickens on pasture about 8 years ago, they were in a pasture with electric fence for cattle. I just clipped the fences to the wire and whah-lah, they were energized!

I think it is specialized chicken electric fence.

Yep. PP has electric poultry netting and I think sem has a hotwire for her horses. I accidentally grabbed a cattle hotwire one time. Big thrill. My hand convulsively clutched it and then sort of 'bounced' off. I didn't know it was hot. Yeehaw.
