oooh your BLRW girls are soo pretty-Hope mine feather out like that! I see potential in some but will sell off the others that are not feathering out that!:-(

Lovins,

Your BLRWs are beautiful. I have a few that look like that. I was wondering though, are they a lot smaller normally than Gumpgirl's Orps? Mine are very close in age, but the BLRWs almost look like bantams compared to the Orps. Is this normal?

are you feeding alot of birds? if so that could be the issue, they do hold back while the others eat so they will grow slower.

Well, they are all together with all sizes and ages, but the feeders are always full, plus they have a Flock Block which they all just LOVE, so I don't think that's it....

This probably doesn't apply to BLRWs, but I have noticed the orps get pretty big pretty fast compared to the other heritage breeds. My SPPRocks, Orloffs and the lone Buckeye haven't been growing as fast as the Orps. Also, I think gump just has some exceptionally heathly birds, bless her.

Yes Brindle, They are enormous. I guess my other birds ARE normal, it's just that the Orps are so huge. What I love about all my birds so far, is that they are all in 1 large coop (for now) from big Orps, to tiny 2 week MF Cochins and Silkies, and everyone gets along great. They all kind of hang out in their own little "gangs" according to when they were put out in the coop. I usually put babies out in the coop at about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks. They go into a 2x4 chicken wire pen, with their heat lamp. After a couple of weeks, they graduate into the coop proper. Then the next batch goes out. It's cute, because the most recent "graduates" usually hang out next to the old pen and snuggle with the new babies at night. The heat lamp is close to the edge of the pen, so some of them still like to get near it. That way, the new babies get to know the older birds gradually. I have 3 feeders at different levels, so the little ones don't get picked on by the bigs ones.

It's such a sweet and contented place at night. Do you guys notice how your birds really never walk anywhere? They always have to run. It's funny 'cause sometimes their feet run away with them and then they have to stop real fast

Yeah, when a shark is bidding, we usually just root her on, we don't usually bid against her. Unless it's for a penny
