I'm not saying that I won't use them for breeders, but they are not what I want for show.

My 2nd round of Catdance silkies are going into lockdown tonight. I was complacent during the first hatch...and only hatched 2 out successfully.

Last week my cat got into the brooder and killed them. I went berserk!

Christine...in the end, you could have show quality silkies, but "knocking" them down because of a nonexistent flaw.

Edited to add...the 2 I hatched were GORGEOUS! Flippin' gorgeous. One was a color I didn't want, but had a fantastic vaulted skull (HUGE!)...she was a partridge. The other was a porcelain...she had spraddle leg and was weak.

Again...my fault with the hatch...and my fault the cat got to them.

You know, I was talking about vaulted skulls with Amy Piehl at a show a few week-ends ago, and she was of the opinion that they are not neccsarily a good thing. They do not always mean the bird will have a great crest (yes, I have a Showgirl with a vault, but she has a poor crest), and it's always possible the bird ,especially a hen, could get injured or killed during breeding due to the exposed brain( under the skin). This makes sense to me. I know in Chihuauas, they often have open fontanels (same as vaults in Silkies) and it is a serious fault.

Indeed, many birds with vaulted skulls have a misshapen crest--you can see where the vault is and the crest is kind of mushroom shaped. Also some of them look like Mickey Mouse ears, like on the skull is the crest, and then over the eyes are 2 smaller 'poofs'. These are not my words, but I did see what she was talking about. What are your thoughts(I'm still learning)

First to Muggs, we still have our catdance, as they are only 3 weeks old, and may very well keep some of them. We have 2 partridge and they will be sold, as we don't do partridge. We will watch them as they grow and decide then what to do with them. Though, we are being like any other serious Silkie breeder and culling birds that don't meet our standard.

You know Paradise, I have often wondered about the vaults myself. I know everyone loves the huge poof on Silkies, but they really aren't supposed to be that big. I don't have any with huge vaults that don't also have huge crests, but I don't have one that doesn't have a huge vault and has a gorgeous crest.

In the end, it all depends on what you want your birds to look like. As long as they are conforming to the standard, then it all depends on which judges you get and what they think is best.

My understanding is it "accentuates" the crest. However, no, they are not the best thing for the bird. Read this...

By the way...these people have some of the most gorgeous silkies out there, and have been showing for years! They speak from experience!

Toes: five, the three front straight, well and evenly spread, the hind toe double, the normal toe in natural position and the extra toe placed above, starting from close to the other toe and curving upwards and backwards, (close to other toe not joined by webbing) the outer and middle toe well feathered

the crest on the bird is gonna be dictated by the genes.....the vault does give the appearance of bigger crest but does also create other issues due to there being openings in the skull...as far as the shape of the crest (mushroomed or different height at the eyes) the standard calls for: Medium size, soft and full, globular, upright, well balanced...i know many of the birds that are shown have their crest shaped by the owners (trimmed)....i know all the judges i have come across are looking for the large full crest and the vault can give you the "edge" by giving the appearance of a bigger crest.
