Muggs, we have 6 separate gardens, a strawberry patch, a strip by the carport that usually gets used for beans. We started a small orchard last year and put in 2 peach, 2 cherry, and 2 apple trees. A section of the bank is used for raspberries, rhubarb patch, asparagus bed, and blueberry bushes. There is still a lot to get done and put in, hazelnuts, chestnuts, pears, butternuts, almonds. There are edible wilds all around the area like walnuts, raspberry and black raspberry, grapes, blackberries, wild strawberries, mushrooms, acorns, and lots more if you learn where to look.

Karen, if you don't have them, look at two books "Seed to Seed" by Suzanne Ashworth and "The Encyclopedia of Country Living" by Carla Emery. Some seeds are easier to save than others, both of those books go over it. I don't have seed to seed, but Carla's book is the homesteaders second bible. Everything you can think of is covered, cooking with a woodstove, raising animals, growing and preserving food, recipes, building, and so on. It was her life's work and it is amazing. I'm slowly weeding out all my hybrids, or breeding them back to open pollinated. Some easily revert, others not so much and get used up and never bought again.

Jeremy, I always thought these nut trees needed a warmer climate but your post prompted to me to lookup their growing zones and they will do fine here in OH. I have never seen (that I know of) any of these around here. Pears do great here but I've never had any luck with apples or peaches... the fruit was always small. I'm going to plant some atlantic giant pumpkins this year for me and the boy. I was hot and heavy into growing giant pumpkins 10 or 12 years ago (before the son & wife came along). I grew a 386 lb pumpkin one year... I swear you could see it growing.
