@Ravynscroft
So i have a bunch of greys, trying to get some cool exciting colors in my flock. Not sure how this whole genetic things works but i have the option of adding one of the following:
white
Black bibbed crested or noncrested
Blue fawn
Snowy
Which one paired with one of my greys do you think would produce a variety of colors or just some cool colors? Im thinkin blue fawn would just be too similar, but let me know
Until you breed the white with another color, hard to tell if there will be hidden patterns/colors that come out or if you'll just get greys... but all offspring will carry white and bred back will give you more whites...
Personally, I would avoid the crested... if you get more crested from him, you shouldn't ever breed them back as it causes severe genetic issues, deformities and failure to hatch or survive...
Black bibbed over grey would give more black bibbed, but with grey pattern leakage...
Snowy would give you greys that carry snowy and bred back would give more snowy...
Blue fawn would give you greys and blue fawn... blue fawn bred back would give you blue fawn, grey and pastel...
For keeping the breeding of your colors to proper ones and most variety, I would go for blue fawn...
Wow thanks for all that info! I was going to avoid the crested anyway, never been a fan of breeding animals with deformities.. i may just go with the blue fawn then! I do love blue... when you say bred back, do you mean breeding the offspring back to the parent? If so which parent?
Yes, breeding back to the parent... breed back to the parent that has the color you want... like blue fawn daughters back to blue fawn father will give you the blue fawns/greys/pastel colors...
Ok cool!! Thanks so much. I may opt for more than one but I'll definitely get the blue fawn if i can
Eta: how many generations deep do you worry about inbreeding?
Ravynscroft is amazing!
You're welcome, Sweetie. I find your knowledge on genetics incredible.Aww, thanks, Julie!
Not really though... I just have a fairly good visual memory, lol...
