Shaws call duck incubation thread (hatch a wonderful(worthless to Ralphie) dux thread)

I picked up my Angel wing girl and folded her wing under Just to see how stiff it was. . it was actually very pliable and she can hold it under until she flaps her wings again. Now I'm back to thinking I may try to wrap it and see what happens just out of sheer curiosity. Here is what she looked like just a few days ago.

I wouldn't leave the bandage on if I was going to be gone very long. I have one now also that is seriously badly bent out... totally flopped over. Phoebe's lone duckling. I can't leave a bandage on him because he has 24/7 access to bathing water. I am thinking I will just trim that wing and let it go.

I honestly don't believe its the type of food or genetics. I've hatched too many with no problems, and mine all eat the same food as each other, and this is the first one. I think it has more to do with the amount of food, rather than the type of food. This one of mine has always been more of a loner, and I find him at the feeder much more often than the others. Even after Malibu's hatch a couple weeks after this fella, he hung out with momma Phoebe and the older ducks, as much as they allowed, but they shoo'd him off a lot of times too, so he would go sit by himself while momma had her time with the older group. Malibu pretty much takes care of him along with her group now, and they have all integrated fairly well. But I still see this little guy eating a lot more than the others. He also doesn't get in the water much. Even when they sleep in the water, for a long time, he would sleep by himself in a small space between the pool and the fence. I believe its just an individual growth thing, until I see proof of something otherwise.
Great reply! Thanks! Han seems to be the big guy of the flock, but maybe in the earlier days ( like two weeks ago ) lol he was pushed back. I know Jemima hangs back to let the babies eat first, she’s kind of disgruntled with her new companions. But she’s over a year old, so she is in the clear. I find downy white feathers on her beak all the time and spread around, so I know she’s giving Odette and Leia the memo. She’s the top girl. She is in charge. She was flirting with Han the other day, bobbing her head and quacking rapidly like hens do to tell a drake she thinks he’s cute. Guess she likes a younger man

I read on here from another member that she waited until first molt and wrapped when feathers began growing back in and the angel wing was fixed. Just a thought.

Well I went ahead and wrapped her last night. She had it off this morning already. I re wrapped it with just medical tape. So far so good . . will see if I can keep it on her for a couple days :fl

I'm hoping since it wasn't too bad to begin with it will maybe go ahead and correct.

Now I'm going to complicate this theory a bit. My goose with AW is the shy one that hangs back, won't eat treats like peas, and at one point I considered that she might not live. Was never sick just a very light eater and slow grower. Her wings were perfect until I left town and they had very little outside the pen time. Which felt consistent with the protein theory, due to less grazing. But that fast? Seems unlikely that a nutritional profile change for 4 days could cause anything at all.
I really don’t think it has anything to do with diet. I have full cayugas who hatched with cayuga Pekin crosses. They all had the same Dad (who had angel wing as a duckling) but different moms. They all grew up together never fought with each other and ate the same things. My Pekin cayuga crosses never even remotely looked like they would have angel wing. Their feathers all were smooth and up tight next to the body. And the momma raised batch I just had there is 1 cross and 2 full cayugas. Same thing. The crosses wings look beautiful. The cayugas wings look whimpy. I honestly think it is genetics and how much cartilage is there to support the wings while they are growing.

I honestly bet you can get it looking really good.

Okay, that makes me feel somewhat better. Not entirely my fault then haha
I don’t think it was your fault whatsoever.

I know she's a goose not a duck but similar enough....I did cut those feathers off and looking at them they are extremely dense and weighty. I wonder if this could be caused by unusually heavy feathers.

Looks easier to live with anyway.
