Does anyone tie their own flies, (not ZIP, as I’m sure - er, hope - most of you have mastered by now) or flies for someone else, using their own birds? Just curious since we’ve got a few guys on the line here. Well, women too. Hell, I’m the one asking so there’s probably a few women who might as well. Duh!
I do with some birds but those are mainly for bass and saltwater and then I usually dye them. Like sealer said the feathers used to tie dry flies are from chickens specifically bred for that purpose. I had some roosters like this years ago and while they work the cost of raising them compared to just buying the feathers makes it not worth the trouble. I tie thousands and thousands of flies every year and it still wasn’t worth the hassle.
I actually still have some hens with feathers suitable for tying flies. With all that being said theres some useable feathers on just about every bird.
