Yes, for floating fly feathers it's best to just purchase hackle feathers from a fly shop. You can buy the breed of chicken used for their hackles (can't remember which breed) but they still won't be as good as what you buy. Plus, you can get any color you want from a fly shop. The people in this business have been breeding for quality tying feathers for decades.
There used to be a guy who sold roosters specifically for fly tying but he's no longer in business.

Thank ya. Nope I don’t drink maxwell house. That stuff is terrible. I went on a coffee can collecting binge to make little redneck charcoal hand heaters while duck hunting. I just saved that one for feathers and tails.
