My miniature pig chicken Pua.

Beautiful girl! And so much smarter than dogs! Everyone on a farm should have a watch pig. I had 2 at different times and never had any trouble with any thefts nor trespassers on a thoroughbred stud. They both knew every horse on the property and would follow the quad bike to each yard or paddock for a “good morning” to each horse and a belly nudge from her favourites. She even enjoyed a young colt that would gently lift her back legs off the ground by her tail and “wheel barrow” her about, before taking turns chasing each other both squealing with delight.

I loved those days and have very fond memories of “Portia” and “Sybil”. Thank you for the memories! No visitors left their cars as they had snout pressed hard up against the glass on the drivers window and didn’t dare to open the door until I called them off. Because they don’t have the best of sight they would be quite invasive in people’s view. From day old to 3 days Portia would scream whilst fitting her sock for warmth so the next evening I decided not to upset her, only to be screamed at for not fitting her sock that time. End of screaming! Then as she got older she wanted to come in the house but was not allowed, so firmly told her “No” so she would stand at the doorway and lean forward as far as she could without unbalancing and quietly grunt so as to let me know she was happy to be inside but not, after all.

I had to go to Sydney and when I returned my neighbours asked us over for a pork roast? I hated them for that and never again spoke to them again, I also decided I disliked my relationship. It wasn’t an easy nor quick split up being we had breeding mares as well as yearling preparation and breaking in, racing, spelling and re-education with multiple owners. Sybil was so smart she hated my ex partner for being abusive to me and he would be mean to her to hurt me, so she would totally ignore him in company which made him really mad and he would chase her on the quad bike, so she worked out that the bike had a very poor turning circle so she waited until he was upon her from behind and she would step to the side and about turn so as to hopefully dislodge him from the bike.

Unfortunately her did damage her one day when I was away so I took her to my doctor friend to live on her farm. I visited often but she would pine and run the fence line when I left each time, so we decided to leave it for a week to visit and she died that week. So devastating. I now live in suburbia but still can have chickens so I love them and my now partner is very understanding and at present have a chick I’m nursing inside every night, and she’s doing well though slowly recovering. Lucky me! Enjoy your lovely girl!
