she can't walk - SAD UPDATE - We lost Blueberry this afternoon

Quote:
When I checked the bottles Sulmet was different it did not have a main ingredient of Sulfadimethoxine, it was just Sulfathizene (something like that). I think thaty they may both be sulfa based, but otherwise completely different. Maybe they are used in a similar manner, but since the chemical names were different I didn't get it.
I checked the price of the office visit with the vet and it's $50. I can do that

(I don't have too much of a choice), and hopefully we'll get to the root of the problem.
I still may order some Sulfadimethoxine online to keep on hand if something like this comes up again. But I'm going to wait on that for now and see what the vet says (I'm betting that all of you have given me the best advice I'm going to get and the vet is going to come up with a "Duh?" and go for a broad spectrum antibiotic and hope it works.
I considered the possibility of a toxin and I did give her a little molasses, but I'll confess I'm a little nervous about flushing her digestive system because I don't know if I can get it in line again. My girls absolutely HATE yogurt, no matter how I try to give it to them. So, that's kind of a problem.

Keep the suggestions coming, please, I'm open to anything at this point that is within my power.
Thanks

I am glad Blueberry is still holding on there Mimi... I haven't been online in a few days... partially because I was afraid of hearing bad news. I just can't bear to lose my little friend. Chiclet is still living inside. She is slowly showing signs of improvement. She can stand now for brief periods (not on her ankles on her feet) and can even walk forward 4 or 5 steps while flapping her wings for balance. A few days ago she could only walk backward on her ankles. I don't know if she will ever recover. I pray she does because I love her very much but I am beginning to feel doubt. I am trying so hard to push it aside and be positive so I want to thank you, Mimi and all of you BYC members who have such great input.

I read the mention of the problem with the pupils - Chiclet doesn't have any problems her pupils are normal.
She is 7 months old and has been laying for almost 2 months.
When I hold her she grabs my fingers with her toes and can hold them tightly.

She acts just like she always has, sneaky, silly and stubborn with the exception of not being able to walk well.

This is a pic i took of her a few minutes ago - heh! What a little dork! Chiclet and I say, "Happy Thanksgiving everyone!"

MotherHen, I'm so glad Chiclet is doing better. You've given her great care and it shows. That also gives me hope that Blueberry will get better soon too. Please keep me posted and I'll keep you posted on anything that happens, or anything I find out.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and Chiclet and all your loved ones.
And to all my BYC friends - Thank you all again for your support, caring and help and have a Happy Thanksgiving

have any of you checked for mites or lice? it could be that cause of the listlessness/leg issues. it happened to one of my girls when i found she fell off the roost one night and i didn't know until the next morning. those little pests can severely affect the bird to a point of not wanting to feed or move. and they don't seem to groom they are so stressed out.

it can affect only one bird and not the others in the coop.

Mites and lice were the first thing I check for because I had a real problem with one of my other girls. We finally took care of that using Ivermectin. She's clean, I checked her all over very carefully when I was trying to determine if she had an injury.
Now for the update. This morning she seemed to have a little congestion and sneezed a couple of times. I think she may be developing a respiratory infection from all the inactivity. So, I started her on Duramycen just to be on the safe side. Who knows, maybe that will take care of the other problem too. We'll just have to see.
I hope everyone has a safe and Happy Thanksgiving..

I hate to say this but speaking from experience the people at the feed stores don't have a clue about chicken meds and will sell you ANYTHING like duramycin, that stuff is literally worthless. I'd get some sulmet asap reguardless of what the feed store tells ya. Hope your birds recovers soon

Earlier this year another hen of ours had walking problems like my other hen now. She developed a respiratory problem too. I think she developed it because we kept her outside in a cage on the porch and it was very rainy and cold for her. Sadly, she died.

I have our other hen in the garage with a heat lamp on and to keep her away from the drafts. Maybe you could move your hen into the garage. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Hello. I'm afraid I had my hen put to sleep. She was getting really depressed at being unable to move about. Though her appetite remained O.K she just sort of gave up. I was very upset but it seemed the kindest thing. Love Lizzie

Lizzie, I'm so sorry to hear that. It must have been so hard for you. But, if you felt it best for your girl...
I'm going to keep on for now and hope we can at least hold out for the vet appointment on Monday.
Take care.

I was able to get mine over the counter at Pet Smart. I have not seen any improvements. It honestly is the strangest thing. I have been giving her tub dunks and blowing her dry because she can't get out of her own way. I am trying everything. I hope she comes out of it.

If anyone has any break thru's please let us know...
