she has pecked a hole in her side. i just put neosporen on it and went to ts to get bluekote. What

i slathered with what little antibiotic ointment i had. put her down and tried to seperate her and another hen got in with her. So i just opened back the door and left to get blue kote. She was pecking at herself when i opened the door. She had a little scab right beside it and it was all that was there two days ago last time i checked her for feather regrowth. Will blue kote be ok to use.

As long as it doesn't show any bones, it will heal. What do you feed your chickens? Her lack of feathers is very concerning.

i didn't poke in it just spread ointment with q tip and hurriedly before they closed went to store to get blue kote and thought I better see if it is ok to use on this bad an open sore. She has no maggotts around it or flies It just looks raw and sore and I don't think infection has started yet. I need to get more neosporin but I thoguht Blue Kote kept them from pecking?

I feed them laying pellets, scratch and they eat all they can peck out of a grassy yard. I had two roos and only 3 hens. The darn roos rode them to death and I was unable to put them anyplace else. Why I got two more hens this year but they are babies and seperated. It is not from lack of feed. I even gave them feather supplements to spurt the regrowth of their feathers. They wore coats all winter or aprons I made them to protect them and keep them from cold. My Roo s are over amourous and rough and those poor hens need to be away from them. I have one roo around them and they act like their lost when I close him up and let them free range in yard.

They are regrowing their feathers from the Sunflow Seeds that I am feeding them. I see down coming on and feathers as well are growing on both my bald little hens.

Ok since no answers on the use of Blue Kote. I just went out and sprayed her wound with it and put her back down. She seems healthy enough except for the open sore. It is not as deep as I thought first time I saw it. It is bad and fairly large. I just will have to leave it in the chicken gods hands for now. I looked for an antibiotic to give her internally and did not see anything. If anybody has any information or help on what to treat her with I would appreciate it. The lack of feathers is not from lack of care and lack of nutrition. They are very well fed chickens and have a clean environment to live and play in. It is from not enough hens and to many Roos which I have taken steps to rectify that and I hope she heals and the regrowth of feathers continues in my girls. I would still appreciate anybody input in to the care and treatment of this open sore. Im just treating it like I would a would of my own thus far. I did not use any peroxide or anything because I was not sure if I should I just used the neosporin liberally then just now coated with blu Kote I used a spray. I bought the dauber type and the spray type and If no more suggestions I will just have to follow the directions on the bottle. Thanks for any and all input.

Their skin looks pretty good considering they have no feathers, but they seem to be regrowing. My hen had a similar gaping hole in her thigh after a dog attack, we got an antibiotic flush to clean it and prevent infection (we bathed the wound in it once a day until it scabbed over enough to protect from germs). We also kept her separated with a heat lamp (it was late fall) until we were sure the other hens would have no reason to peck it. We got blukote but didn't end up using it, the scab and other feathers camoflauged the wound fine. Since yours doesn't have the feather camo, I would get blukote for sure. Good news is, they can grow back the patch of skin okay, and feathers will grow back there as well.
