She laid our flock's first egg today, what is she?

This was my thought process as well. Black Aussies throw green and oil slick colors in sunlight, not red. There doesn't seem to be any discoloration on the other chickens in the same shot, so she must have red on her.

If the sun is at the right spot it throws an orange light, and I have seen my Aussies with an orange kind of "glow," so it happens.

In looking closely, the other buff colored ones look pretty pink, too. I think it is just the lighting as well.

Some more pictures. I tried for better light, but once the she realized there were no treats I just became the crazy lady trying to herd her out of the shade.

She has a lot of white flecks of yogurt on her from a first egg celebratory feast.

See, she really is not sure why I follow her everywhere.

And another.

Not sure the light is much better today.

Thanks for all the help. She is a doll, whatever she is.
I got lucky. I have nice chickens. BYC is such a great tool, and has made my foray into chicken ownership much more pleasurable than I imagined when I began.

Australorp.
In the fall the sun will throw an orange/red cast to things here in the north. Not sure where the rest of you all are at, but add that to the foliage and lots of orange, brown, red and yellow around, cameras can fool ya.

Very pretty girl.

You'd think the camera was a weapon, the way she ran from me. Usually she is the first one to come for a visit & to beg for treats.
