She laid our flock's first egg today, what is she?

I saw red, too! Lol. I was thinking RIR, but can't tell if it is just the coloring of the picture. Her eyes look more like my Aussie, though...

I thought red too at first, I think we are seeing the sun hitting her black feathers. Look at the bottoms of her feet. If they are pinkish white, she is probably and Orp or Aussie. I can tell the difference to see them together because of the slight body shape and head shape difference, but not in this picture. If they are yellow, probably a Jersey Giant.
I really doubt she is a sex link because there is not gold in her for starters and they tend to have a different shape about their head and comb.
If you have any of these I think you will be quite happy. She is a pullet just coming into lay so she may fill out a little more for you. You have cared for her well, she looks bright eyed and vigorous and that is the most important thing.
Enjoy those eggs!

ok at least i know i'm not the only one seeing red. i was also thinking rir

Me too lol I thought "At last, a RIR that's actually a RIR with beautiful dark colouring."

i have black chickens and when the sun hits them they have a green sheen they dont turn red no matter what angle you look at them. PLEASE take some pics out in the full sun with no shade so we all can tell weather she is red or black

I'll run out & see what I can get. She does not show much red. I think that picture is the pink sunset light fooling the camera.
She usually flashes deep jewel green when in the light.
Be back... they are roosting in our cherry tree...

This was my thought process as well. Black Aussies throw green and oil slick colors in sunlight, not red. There doesn't seem to be any discoloration on the other chickens in the same shot, so she must have red on her.
