She never laid a single egg?

Yesterday we noticed her breathing was noisy and seemed harder than usual. Today she's sitting in a nest and didn't get out of it. Her belly is quite hard, a bit squishy but definitely hard.

Well she is dead. I found her lethargic, not being able to move, decided that it was best to put her down. I opened her and found this bulky, hard mass. Thats what was making her so bloated. There was not really any fluid. Here's a shot of the mass cut in half. What is it?

Good on you for opening her up.
Massive infection....maybe egg yolk peritonitis?
Where in the tract was this...if you could tell?
Were they other masses or yolks?

It was at the end of the tract, right before the opening! Could not see any more masses or yolks. This thing was at least 5-6 inch in diameter!

Wow, that's big!
Was there any shell in that mass?
Did you look at all the organs....or was that far enough to go?

Thanks for your replies. We are getting a few more in the coop, we will avoid red sex links. Are there any other breeds that have similar reproductive issues?
Thanks!
