She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

concealment is an issue but it sure does work nice.
That's what the 24 is for

I have a Beretta 96FS...concealment is an issue but it sure does work nice.

While I was taking those poult pics, my "flock protector" was hovering over and drooling on them, and licking anyone who stepped off the cloth. I wouldn't trust him for 10 seconds with a live critter if I wasn't there to "correct" him.
I have two dogs 1 is a staffordshire bull terrier and the other is a terrier cross lurcher and when my girls are free ranging in the garden (when I,m home) they chase the dogs it,s so funny to watch, I have no doubt if I wasn't there it could be the other way round

This was my first time hatching. I read all the methods from many people on BYC.
So... Here is my story.
I have a Janoel 48. It has a digital thermostat and humidistat. A nice countdown display. Since I live in humid FL i decided that DRY is the way to go.
I ignored the humidity readings and it stayed between 30 and 45 MOL :) The temperature was a very stable 37.5 c that's about 99.5 f

I got some costly shipped eggs and some my friend gave me from her EE set in the bator the same day.
To my dismay, the automatic turner did not work, so I tilted the eggs in the trays a time or two a day. Fast forward to day 14 - today.
I was in the room where the incubator is located and heard some noise from the incubator. My thought: finally, the turner is working so I went to check,
opened the top and was met with 2 perfect little EE chicks. Hatched in the turner, no raised humidity. I was SHOCKED. How can this be?
It seems apparent when my friend collected the eggs, some were already started.
My luck the pricey shipped eggs will not hatch and I will be getting staggered hatches of EE.

How in the world do you handle that? She had to have been leaving the eggs in the nest for a week with a broody hen, maybe?

My dogs stay close to mine during the day to keep other critters out while I'm not home, but they have nice big pens, inside my already-fenced yard. Won't have that luxury at my farm though, but we are going to try an automatic door and see how it goes. (I might have to buy some "test chickens" that I'm not so attached to first.) LOL
You know, this could go along with this thread. Who free ranges, who pens, and why?

Wow!! Yeah, I would say they had a little incubation before you set them. LOL

I have a large pen. We live too close to the road and I am afraid that w/o supervision they'd be road kill. I have let them out a couple times while I am out there to graze in the side yard cause the pen doesn't have a lot of grass. I plan to reseed it this fall. My special needs roo I take out and let range in the yard while I play and have "gym" with my son. If I lived on more land and farther from the road I would have a fenced in yard for us, (who wants to play in chicken poop???) and free range them.

We're on 15 acres, and I would fence in about an acre if it were only one breed, but we have a lot of hawks, too. In the first 3 years I lost chickens to 2 hawks, a fox, a 'possum (that's how we say it down here), a raccoon, and a feral cat. That's why I like Hav-a-Heart traps. Makes them much easier to shoot

. I did learn that you could shoot a feral cat between the eyes with a 22 and they would still run for 50 yards, but if you hit them with a 25-06...

My pens look like Fort Knox now. No more chicken wire, all hog wire, anchored a foot into the ground, with framed, hog wire roofs

If I were raising pure breds, I would be less likely to free range for a couple reasons. One the monetary loss is greater, (even if the sentemental is not,) and two I would want to keep the line pure w/out having to seperate out to breed in case I had someone that wanted eggs, or I decided split second I wanted to hatch a certain breed. The only pure breds that I have that I would be using for breeding is the Spitzhaubens. I plan on them going in their own coop and run this fall, but I only plan on keeping 6 of them. I'm sperating them out this weekend to figure out (if I can) sexes and what I am keeping then the others will go on CL.
