I don't need to find out if my incubator back up plan will work, this came through:

THE PRIMARY SEVERE WEATHER THREAT WILL BE STRONG AND DAMAGING WIND GUSTS...ALONG WITH LOCALIZED HEAVY DOWN POURS WHICH MAY CAUSE ISOLATED FLASH FLOODING.
IN ADDITION...FREQUENT CLOUD TO GROUND LIGHTNING AND HAIL UP TO ONE INCH IN DIAMETER IS POSSIBLE. THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT WILL SHIFT EAST OF OUR REGION BY 7 PM THIS EVENING.

Ok I went out take care of my chickens put a blade on the mower check the mower to see if I bent the crankshaft talk to a customer on the phone .Takes about 2 hrs. come in to 6 new pages .And after 45 min. I'm caught up.so far I've made to feel old scared and dumb. let me see if I've got this right Amy slept late again WV has been tracking squirrels walnut Hill has been running through the woods on a dirt bike carrying a gun that to big to hide and we have a newbe with eggs hatching at 14 days and SC playing chicken detective and getting or giving a math lesson . Is that about right .I think there are enough guns on these 6 pages to put down a small rebellion .and all I have is a 6 shooter 35 lever action and shotgun or 2 and a 22 carbine old because my guns are. dumb because I don't Know what these guns are and scared because you'll might shot me if I say the wrong thing. now my chickens only get out when I can watch them But with 4 breeds it impossible to let them all out at once I have a who friend swears by his dog witch I can't spell the name of . it's great something or other great big and white. says I should get one looks it could eat as much as horse and anything that eats that much has got to crap that much so I'll not be getting one those. I have to go to work tomorrow so I'll come back 10 pages behind don't do smart phones .

I have a Beretta 96FS...concealment is an issue but it sure does work nice.

While I was taking those poult pics, my "flock protector" was hovering over and drooling on them, and licking anyone who stepped off the cloth. I wouldn't trust him for 10 seconds with a live critter if I wasn't there to "correct" him.

That's the .40 right? Hubby has the 92FS which is the 9mm. Both of those look identical to my Cheetah (84FS)... only they are much bigger!! I don't conceal the 84, but its a single stack and a little slimmer, so it wouldn't be too difficult for most people to conceal. But I'm a tiny little thing, so its hard for me to conceal much.

Good idea. I have a fenced yard, about 3/4 of an acre of my 2 acre property. The yard used to belong to the dogs. Then I separated one end for the ducks, then added the chicken area, and a grow out area. The dogs have collars for my underground fence, so when we added the chick/duck pens, the fence wire keeps the dogs out of the chick/duck areas. The chicken areas are covered with mesh, but the duck area is open, but has coverage from some big trees. Once all these guys grow up, we will move them to our farm about 45 minutes away from our house, and its about 80 acres. Right now, only the 2 roosters live there. They have a small Fort Knox pen, but we will expand it before moving anyone else there. Would love to let them free-range there, but it will depend on how much we can fence in, and if the auto-door works, etc. And if they are smart enough to use the door, they may live! lol
The banties that I am hatching now will move into the pens at home, and I plan to keep them there. Then I'll be done! Haha yea, right.

This was my first time hatching. I read all the methods from many people on BYC.
So... Here is my story.
I have a Janoel 48. It has a digital thermostat and humidistat. A nice countdown display. Since I live in humid FL i decided that DRY is the way to go.
I ignored the humidity readings and it stayed between 30 and 45 MOL The temperature was a very stable 37.5 c that's about 99.5 f

I got some costly shipped eggs and some my friend gave me from her EE set in the bator the same day.
To my dismay, the automatic turner did not work, so I tilted the eggs in the trays a time or two a day. Fast forward to day 14 - today.
I was in the room where the incubator is located and heard some noise from the incubator. My thought: finally, the turner is working so I went to check,
opened the top and was met with 2 perfect little EE chicks. Hatched in the turner, no raised humidity. I was SHOCKED. How can this be?
It seems apparent when my friend collected the eggs, some were already started.
My luck the pricey shipped eggs will not hatch and I will be getting staggered hatches of EE.

I'd say that would definitely be a shocker! Did you ask the friend about it?

We're on 15 acres, and I would fence in about an acre if it were only one breed, but we have a lot of hawks, too. In the first 3 years I lost chickens to 2 hawks, a fox, a 'possum (that's how we say it down here), a raccoon, and a feral cat. That's why I like Hav-a-Heart traps. Makes them much easier to shoot

. I did learn that you could shoot a feral cat between the eyes with a 22 and they would still run for 50 yards, but if you hit them with a 25-06...

My pens look like Fort Knox now. No more chicken wire, all hog wire, anchored a foot into the ground, with framed, hog wire roofs

Fencing in doesn't help with the 'possums, foxes and coons (not raccoons

) and hawks without covering the top. That's why I don't want to just fence a big area in.

So in other news my bronze turkey has decided today is the day to start sitting. Not sure how many she is on she had 10 in the next yesterday but there are 4 of them so next time she is off I'll get me a head count. Also should have a hatch Monday Tuesday and I'm way hands off. My eggs are being incubated 30 minutes away from me. A friend agreed to hatch them so no candling or worrying with humidity or temps and no hourly pics of eggs sorry Amy
