She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Dogs and foxes have been my worst enemy since getting chickens. I lost 4 silkies to our dog, and numerous chickens to foxes. :he

What kind of dog?? My girls are So good w my flock as well as 2 others we fostered, one of those even went on to become my Uncles lives stock gaurdian. After loosing 15 hens, dear uncle took on Country, we rescued the poor lil pup from starving under a trailer in a fighting area. Uncle hated pitt bulls until Countrys first night there, they got the possum ;) no more problems :D

Despite the bathing mess this is my fav pic of him. His markings are so funny like he sat in paint :)

We were told she was a border collie jack Russell mix. But she's killed maybe 8 chickens. She thinks they're playing with her. All of them were small, like silkies or bantam. She's hasn't killed any since March, and she's much more relaxed now.

Speaking of predators, I have a skunk hanging around the coop late at night around 10pm and then he comes back early around 5am. I think it's looking for food. But he can't get into the coop...thankfully!
Your Not even kind of alone! My old man is sick of it! He perfers the ducks nowadays! What would you earimate their weights at? Im talking about some ridiculous 15 lb birds!
Wow! That's heavy. My guys are weighing in at 250-300 grams. Lol
Bad news on my hatch and it's all my fault unfortunately. I thought SC and I had set about the same time so I figured my hatch was way overdue. SC's are already out and signed up for preschool. Without counting the days (or hours) I just figured it was over and went to eggtopsy to see what was wrong with the chicks, find out what stage they passed at, and find out what color would result from a Marans over my RSL. I cracked the big air cell end open a little on each one. I check the one I thought died a week ago. Sure enough it stunk like crazy. I open the next one. Peel back the membrane a bit. Chick is breathing! Look at the other one. Chick is breathing. :barnie Now I stop to think about the real date I set and how many days it's been. I'm at the end of day 21. Idiot! I should have given them a few more days. Now I'm fullon red team on these suckers. Not because I'm a meddler, but because I caused the problem for them. Every time I tried to peel back a little membrane I got red blood. Not gushing or flowing, but definitely red blood. Leave them? I can't. Now they are drying out. I wrapped them in wet paper towel this morning. They were both peeping. I'm pretty sure they were saying something like "you murdered us!". One even pipped the shell last night below the point that I broke the big end off. I will have to check after work and hope for the best. I leave them in and they probably die shrink wrapped from me opening the shell. I try to help them out and they bleed to death. :hit What can I do for them? Silver lining. I went into lockdown with two viable eggs and they were probably both going to hatch just fine so my incubator is still working well.
Oh no!! That's horrible! I was reading on another thread that if the chicks starts getting glued to the shell you can run it under warm water, just be careful not to get water near the nostrils. Good luck. Update when you get home.

Love him!! My hens can peck one of my dogs on the tail and he won't move, but the other one... well... he wants to play! I found a little pile of tail feathers yesterday, but can't tell who they came from. I'm afraid the dog spit them out, but I have no more evidence.

Not fun. Good luck!

for the best....
Seriously, I almost asked you the other day if you weren't a few days behind SC, but figured I was just mistaken. I wish I had asked now.

Be careful. Skunks love chicken. If it were me, I would trap it and dispose of it

Don't feel bad, I thought he was a few days ahead. I thought he was hatching last weekend until he started posting again yesterday

@lazy gardener sorry about your hen... I feel your pain... lost a few to predators, but worse thing was our neighbors dogs... they ripped through the fence into our grow out pen and wiped out 47 within 2 days... I had to end suffering on many... that's always rough...

And the dog???

Ah that explains a few things.

yes, definitely not mute. Since getting rid of my SS roosters, she's become lead hen.
x2!
I'm sorry about your eggs, Sidewing!

Thanks. Please say a little prayer for them.

Not fun. Good luck!

It's my own darn fault. I'm going to put all the dates on a paper above the bator in the future. I asked the DW to put neosporin on them and they are wrapped in moist paper towel for now. I sure love my wife.
