She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Well I just went out to a sad sight. While checking under Betty the Broody for stolen eggs, I found a little mummy. Looks like it may have tried to pip, and then got shrink-wrapped in the external membrane, A lot of the shell was off, but the white membrane was fused to the little body. I peeled a bit, and the yolk sac was half absorbed. seemed to be in the right position though.

So I brought in the other egg, not sure if it was the "good egg" or "bad egg" and of course, it's all dark with an appropriate air cell. No movement, no internal pip. Decided to water candle before thinking about opening it, and nothing, until I went to reach to take it out and it twitched.

So I fired up the incubator, set it at 99.4 and 70% humidity. Figured I would give it a day or three and see what happens, Betty can have the golf ball for now. I think it's day 19 today.

Oh No!!

Poor Betty...

Plus me, that makes 4. Start a new thread in the spring, or use this one? Hopefully we can choose a time that will be compatible for all weather wise.
Just be sure the temp has been stable for at least 12 hours before committing eggs. You may end up with temp creep, which could be lethal! I wouldn't bother to add water. You're in a good range with humidity, no matter which one you believe.

Stable x 12 hours!

You missed me!

Sorry about the chick. I've never seen a true shrink wrap before. Doesn't sound like a pretty sight! Good luck on the egg! Will she get the baby back or be stuck with the golf ball? Lol!

Wasn't sure what it was at first, looked like a giant white blob of chewing gum with blue eggshell stuck here and there and a few bits of chick down poking out. Was really hard to find a place to peel.

I planned on shipping to WV and sideWing in Jan. or Feb. if that works for them. I really don't need anything in return, unless someone develops a morning after scratch for silkies

Yup, you need that morning after scratch or you'll have no room for your Ameraucanas or BCM!

Peeping Tom....
LOL

That's what I always think when he says it. Kinda creepy!

this is the closest I have had the two temperature gauges... just need to get the temp up (I have been taking my time and slowly increasing).

just like mine both gages are most likely wrong the little paper one is not much better I would go to walmart and get a fish Aquarium thermometer cost $3 it is hard to read but very accurate use that instead of the one's you have. if the room is at a constant temp. it will hold OK these incubators need a constant environment to work well I took my thermometer and hygrometer out of the little round case and replaced it with a hygoset II for cigar humidor My thermometer is a mainstays cooking probe type also from walmart it cost $9 I pushed it through the top beside the round one you can leave what is there but do not trust it. I messed with those things till I wash sick of them and made the changes

So happy they made it to you in good condition!!! Looks like they didn't beat the box up horribly either...

Btw, I found putting those stickers on the boxes caused those boxes to get targeted for punting practice... simple fragile and this end up works really well...
Good advice. My box WITH stickers had all kinds of holes in it and broken eggs.

He's looking really good! WIll be nice to see how he fills out and put me on your egg list for spring!
I sure hope to have more BCM laying by spring. Right now I have one BCM girl and one GCM. Working on getting good stock for pullets right now.

The one on the floor calibrated exactly with my candy thermometer so I am confident its more accurate than the one on the lid. Didnt even think to grab an aquarium thermometer. I heard reptile thermometer is pretty accurate as well.

I read that too. Ruby - I don't know if anyone has collected statistics on it and I bet it varies from route to route.

Good luck to everyone's batches and hatches!
Don't know why it won't quote the part I want to reply to, but the raised brooder absolutely, 100% makes a huge difference. I started brooding the days olds in the house with the brooder on a table, and there was so much difference that I raised all my outside brooders up 3 feet. Now when I walk out to the brooders and squat down, half of them will run to the door. As they start feathering out, they get a little more skittish, but there are always a few that stay pretty tame. The plate heater is so much better at keeping them calm than the light, though I will still use the light for large broods

Ruby, the chart says splash and blue will give 50% of each.

Thanks, Friday and WV. I'm hoping they'll all live.

I'm sorry about your chicks, Friday. :hugs

SC, are your silkies all white? What is their quality?

I hear you there, I have 2 beautiful Orloff cockerels and One pullet. I think my little ones are one boy and one girl. Earlier I lost a little cockerel and culled two. I'm pullet deprived these days.

Will she get the baby back or be stuck with the golf ball? Lol!

My hopes are the chick will hatch this weekend and I can find another couple day-olds and give them all back to her. If it doesn't, I'll wait until I find some babies if she persists on being broody. Part of me hopes she just gives up - it's been 5 weeks already!
