Hey guys, two of the chicks that shipped were a little squished when they got here, so we separated them and gave them save a chick and have been babying them, but they still aren't doing well.   I was hoping it was heat stress, stress from shipping, but after a brief recovery, they went back to "not so good" status. Here's a link to the video:

I'd love to hear any thoughts.

I know the video isn't that great.  I hope you can see the little twitching thing they are doing with their head.  And they won't eat(or drink unless I make them drink).
Does it look like normal heat stress to you?  Anything else I can do to help them?

Sorry to hear you lost one. The chick I almost lost was shaking his head. I was thinking around what walnut said, my chick was so weak that he just stayed right under the heat and got himself dehydrated. Keep trying the sav-a-chick. Stick his beak in and then point his beak up and head back so he can swallow. Maybe a couple drops of poly-sol without iron. I hope he makes it!

Do you think it's cocci???? Have you seen any bloody poop?

It comes from poop. They already have some of the bacteria in side their gut but it can explode in population and make them sick esp if there pens are cleaned out well. Try giving it some probiotics and yogurt.

So very tiny!!!

Today is day #19 for broody. She came off the nest for a while, so I brought the eggs in and candled. They are all alive and moving. The air cells are a good size and have drawn down nicely. It looks like some have entered the air cells. No peeping.

Thanks Ross. There's a nice pip in the shell and a torn membrane so I know it's getting some air. Still cheeping!

Having no luck finding other babies so far, One person will have a batch in a week and another doesn't know when her clutches will hatch. (She uses the SC method of hatching once the spring rush is over. Anything that hatches later is a bonus or gets added to the yard flock)

But when you see chicks start Pipping (or hatching, whatever terminology one may want to use) why can't we help get them out of the shell - no matter what stage of the hatching process they may be in. what are the dangers involved or hazards to the chick in helping them break the shell and membrane?

Because they need time to absorb the yolk and all the blood in the membrane. If you help and it's too early they will bleed to death and die...that is why it is best to let them hatch at their own rate....unless you notice a problem.
