WV - are you going to use the humidity pump? It can be a bit of a pain to get going, but I love it.

Make sure you prime the tubing first or the pump can have trouble filling the tube.

I have no idea if I will need it or not!! I figured I'd turn it on without the pump first, and see what happens... then jump on here for help from you guys!

Its very humid here, but I do want to learn to use the pump, in case we have some really dry days. Our weather is unpredictable! (although the house stays pretty stable)

You won't need it until you start running the heater in your house

She's got enough on her plate to deal with without adding crazy Internet chicken people to the mix! ;)

I quickly candled my eggs for development last night. I didn't even touch them just held the flashlight up to them. Air cells are HORRIBLE! Poor things. But 11/14 were developing. The few that I really wanted have started. But some development looks behind others. May be red rings. This is the first batch I'm actually going to wait the full 7 days to start tilting. There is fluid inside the air cells! What is that??

11 out of 14 is great, the ones I got were 2 out of 12. They also had detached aircells, these are now rock solid no movement at all on those aircells. I waited 7 days to start turning on those.
I switched the turner on last night for my new batch from Ravyn. I am not going to candle until Thursday night. It is probably good that I have a staggered hatch. It prevents me from obsessing. Th coolerbator seems to be doing well. Lock started today. I will increase the humidity on the nasties tonight. The shells are full of chick.

When people ask about vaccinated chicks, I tell them I don't and why. Never lost a sale. I have a friend with similar breeds, she vaccinates all for Mareks, and her sales aren't as good as mine. A lot of that has to do with location, but in my experience vaccination does not translate to extra sales, at least locally
I personally wouldn't want to buy vaccinated chicks, just because of all that goes into vaccines nowadays. Someone said they thought all big name hatcheries vaccinate, they don't, but they give the option at check out if you want all the chicks vaccinated. It cost maybe 50¢ more a chick or something.

It's so cheap to vaccinate that cost isn't really a factor. I have my reasons for not vaccinating, but like Don said, if I have an outbreak I will be kicking myself

I totally understand what you are saying, and I agree. If I ever have an outbreak, I will be smacking myself for not vaccinating, but I leaned a little more to the side of not vaccinating because that means those birds are then carriers, right? Then introducing those birds to unvaccinated birds could be a problem
The reading that I did recently said that they don't think the vaccine makes them carriers anymore. And that they would not be contagious to any other birds. I don't know the truth, but I was just reading about this a few days ago because someone I helped on a thread asked me about the vaccine and I really didn't know.

There is one couple (like your brother) in my area, that sells breeder quality silkies. They are beautiful birds. And they know it. Straight run chicks are $10 firm. They don't sell with vaccinations. They also mock BYC and the members. They don't know it yet but next year I'd like to be their competitor and sell silkies cheaper but of the similar quality. The other people that sell silkies in my area have ugly birds. Red combs, no five toes. They must have mixed blood. So it would be interesting to see if I can find a leg up on that one couple.
Oh!! So its for the embryo development! I thought it had to do with stabilizing the air cell. Geez, I feel stupid now! Thank you for enlightening me. I know I had read how much harder they were, just never paid attention as to why. I wish I had been able to catch up with you to have a dual (lol) but we'll get em next time!
Yes, it's all about getting the embryo strong enough, to grow and ultimately hatch despite the damage to air cells and the rest of the contents of the egg. It has been written that red rings in shipped eggs is the embryo starting but then unable to thrive in the damaged environment.
New design to compete with the TSC prefabs. Still gotta finish the cleanout door, ramp, and paint, but going to see if a smaller one will sell. Going to build a 4 ft detachable run as well
Soooo nice!!

Right now I am steady at 30% with no water and the vent fully open. In January it takes both wells full of water and the vent half shut to maintain 40%. The beauty of the pump is you can maintain the higher humidity with the vent fully open

That's awesome!! I'm so happy for you. I usually have rock solid air cells by day 5 on shipped and they do good after that. We'll have to give official candling updates on day 7. I really just wanted to open the incubators to get some fresh air in there and give a slight cool down for a few mins. My flashlight was sitting right there and I couldn't resist the temptation to peek! I hope by Thursday you'll have two little chicks to update on also!! Good luck with the hatch!!

Good luck and happy hatching, everybody!
SC, I like your little coop!
Ruby, my white silkie rooster from Meyer has a red-purple comb. :he it's turned more red as he ages. The mama of Pigeon is his daughter, and she has a very bright red comb.
