She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

It's interesting. All kinds of folks raise chickens. My wife assumed this forum was full of guys. I told her it was mostly females and they like watching chickens like I do!

Me too! I have 5 cockerels that need to be soup. They are starting to crow and that is making the two older ones crow a lot. I'm in a neighborhood and I'm already pushing it with the older two.

Well, I like to eat good tasting stuff, and to get it I have to make it. :)

I have the same problem with one of my juveniles. If he'd shut his mouth the big boys would be pretty quiet. I'm surrounded by subdivision. But he's a pretty boy, and it's tempting to keep him long enough to see him grow up and see if he's a better built roo than his daddy.

Any other cockerels in the batch are late bloomers and will have a dinner invitation.

Small birds also make great pot pies and yield enough meat for sausage making. When trimming breasts for the grill, I slice off the thin edges so they cook evenly. I also throw drumstick meat in. Those scraps go into a freezer bag and when I have enough, I make a batch of sausage.

I couldn't get $5/dozen selling in my yard, but you see the communists paying $9 for a half dozen at Whole Foods for "organic". If it didn't violate my philosophy to pay $18/dozen for eggs, I would love to crack those beside mine and see which looked better
I pretty sure yours would look better than the store bought eggs.

Ok, so seriously, why the organic feed. Is it just the "organic" thing? Maybe it's just me, but if I have bugs in the garden, I'm gonna Ortho the crap out of them.

Thanks for shaving your legs, BTW. It's not like we're frogs...

LOL. I go organic as much as I can because I don't like the idea of eating pesticide residue. Don't use plastics as much as possible either. I avoid as much toxins as I can

Doubt they are communists either, just wealthy and chickenless. Yours probably taste the same.
I really hate Whole Foods. Not even because of the hippie type atmosphere, but because of the overpriced stuff. I don't know what kind of stores you guys hve out there, but I would much rather go to Fresh Market and buy the good expensive stuff than what Whole Foods carries. People around here that shop at Whole Foods just like saying "Have you been to Whole Foods?"
I will say, though, that I like the Wasabi Nori Seaweed

Same thing I feed the fish in my tank, minus the wasabi

My family does try to go as organic as we can and non-gmo if possible. I don't like folks messing with things God made perfect. I could be wrong and I'm really not a conspiracy theory kind of guy, but all these bees dying started about the same time Monsanto bought up all the small seed producers and started ruling the AG world. Could it be the gmo crap killing the bees? I never have seen a scientist bring it up in an interview. Why? They do however blame it on global warming even though we haven't warmed significantly for 15 years. I don't want to go down that rat hole, but there ya go.

Yours will be fresher.

A couple of clues on market eggs:
Layer strains have been selectively bred to provide thicker albumen and uniform shell color (Haugh unit) http://www.tss-york.com/eggquality/haughunit http://www.hyline.com/UserDocs/Pages/BRN_PERF_ENG.pdf

Yolk color is influenced by diet. High concentrations of wheat and soy lead to pale yolks. Addition of marigold petals or carrot peels to the feed enhances yolk color. http://www.feedipedia.org/node/90 A side effect is coloring of the skin, fat and flesh to a yellowish tone. A Cornish cross naturally has pale pink skin and pink meat, not yellow-orange as seen in the stores. Fat is a rich cream color, not yellow.
