I do have to agree with you!! I had curry last week and the next day I was so tore up that I struggled to exercise with my group.

Let's just say I don't remember the first rainfall, but I was around when the puddles dried up. I'm probably older than any two of you put together; maybe closer to three...not sure 

I doubt that unless you're in your mid hundreds. Most of this thread are over 40's with a few over 70. So three put together could give you 180.

Everything happens for a reason, and sometimes i cant accept that these things are building who i am.

Some things just happen, no reason necessary. But resolving them does build your skill set or your confidence or your character, depending on the type of issue.

Do they lay on the floor? Just make sure you don't accidentally step on them while looking for eggs, if they do! I still have my nest boxes closed off. I have four of them. When I finally open them, I'm wondering if they will figure it out or just think "wow, we've got a new bed to sleep in". I have 3 beautiful roosts that have never been used because they sleep on the floor and I still have to go out every night and put each one inside the coop! That's the only stuff that makes me wish I had some seasoned chickens around to show the ones I hatched how to act like chickens! Lol

Believe it or not, its my silkies who go into the coop first, every night. They take their place on the roost, then get booted when everyone else clamors in. Then the turkey goes in last and wipes them all out! I'm waiting for one of the LO roos to put her in her place!

I've read that it is better not to use straw because it is hollow and can harbor mites?? I use shavings because I have some for the brooder box but if I have some hay I use that, too. Of course, nothing really gets moldy here very easily.

Did your chickens survive the infection?

I shake out PDZ, then cover the floor with straw. Pine shavings in the nest boxes.

Even when I moved the Reds, they took right away to the new boxes. There are 6 boxes, most of them use 1, but I'll find an egg or two in one of the other boxes. I had one laid outside in the run, but only once. Otherwise, they are smart girls. I'm so impressed with their production and smarts...

I didn't even want to talk about it yesterday but I got the new eggs! I ever so gently unwrapped them and gave them a quick candle as I put them into an egg carton to rest. When I saw the air cells, I literally saw myself flushing $$$ down the toilet and I was I'm realizing that I've been very fortunate with the past shipments I've had. And always hatched out over 50%. But the air cells were always intact. I'm wondering if it's the way she packs the eggs compared to the other breeders. I think I like the way the other people pack the eggs much better. Maybe FL to NY is just a bit to far. Even though I've hatched from Southern GA. I just
2 eggs were cracked but she did send 18 eggs. I guess I have no other choice but to set them and hope for the best. I hate tying up the incubator on eggs this bad but if just 2 hatch, I will be thrilled!! I'm open to any suggestions.

I just can't fathom how someone with as beautiful chicks as she has, and sells hatching eggs, can't pack any better than that! I'm at a loss! I guess since you've already spent the money, you might as well try them. It sure is disappointing, but maybe they will surprise you and reattach.

I am totally serious here, go full blue on this hatch. Set them, don't candle them until lockdown, keep your humidity right, and don't worry yourself needlessly for the next three weeks. I bet you would be pleasantly surprised at the end

Face it, Amy... we all KNOW SC is more narcissistic than you... Why does crowing and clucking bother everyone? I much prefer hearing my 50... oh 100... well, 150... hens and roos carrying on than downtown city life...

Thankfully they are just Nankin Bantams so there crows are tiny and amusing but they still get annoying after 10 hours of it.

We illegally had chickens in the city before we moved. They were an impulse from the Strawberry Festival in Belleville MI just over 4 years ago. We were NOT prepared! One hen one rooster that would crow at 5am. The neighbor kiddie corner behind us didnt like it. But his dog would jump the fence and poop in our yard, so in my eyes we were even. Golden seabright and I dont remember what the other was.

Could never handle downtown city - the barking dogs of my neighbors in the suburbs were bad enough. Clucking and egg songs don't bother me at all. Crowing is new to me so I'm trying to figure out whether it is normal for my cockerel to crow several hundred times when I'm trying to concentrate on a complicated medical record, or if he needs to go to someone with a bigger piece of property. If he crowed once in a while, like the rooster a few streets over, it wouldn't bother me at all. If he outgrows it, that would be the best. Of course he's my favorite, and I think he has the best type so far (but not the best color) so I'm hesitant to get rid of him.

I was born & raised in Metro Detroit. We moved 4 hours north almost 4 years ago. Went from the over populated cookie cutter neighborhood with houses like 40 feet apart, crappy schools and work commutes anywhere from 45min - 1 1/2 hours. To our new house 15 min from town, 10 acres of hard woods, with vacant lots on 3 sides of us and our closest neighbors are excited about our peeps & quacks, amazing schools and 4H clubs. After living in the "city" all my life and hearing the constant dogs/sirens/planes/systems and all other noise I never thought I would of adjusted to the peace and quiet of the woods so fast. Plus because they free range I am kinda worried that their vocals will attract predators. We have bear, coyote, porcupine and all sorts of critters.

Cooking until firm will kill bacteria. But there is no reason to think they are any more "dangerous" than eggs that have made it through a commercial egg farm/packaging/shipping/grocery case. If you are worried, add half a capful of bleach to your float test water, about a gallon or so, and leave the eggs in for 30 seconds or so. And make the float test water hot faucet water, 110-120F. They'll be safer than grocery eggs if you toss floaters, leakers, cracks, and stinkers. Your picture brought back horrid memories of my mom's RIRs who community laid nests of 5 or 6 dozen out in the weeds in summer. When I'd mow with the Allis Chalmers, I'd sometimes hit one of those abandoned nests.

I hate it when you run things over with the mower. Once I ran over a pregnant snake. I felt so bad. Thankfully these birds take care of what little lawn we have and only used the mower once this year.

My boys start at 5:15! I don't think any of my neighbors will hear, nor care, but I know what you mean, it does cross your mind when you hear them that loud.
