She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

I didnt think I would have to mark the ceramics in the nests, I thought I would easily tell them

Clean, not odd shaped, fresh real eggs. What about air cell size & shape?

The worst eggs I ever had were from an old woman who has huge flocks that run in an old dairy barn. She gathers eggs as she finds them. Then she puts them in buckets in a bedroom until someone wants to buy them. I set two dozen full sized and 18 bantam eggs and had 5 bantams hatch, the others were stink bombs. All air cells were day 7-14 size at time of set.

From my flock, I've only had one "bad" egg ever. It was a turkey egg that was probably buried in the dirt in the yard for a week or three. Again, large air cell, and dirty. I shouldn't have set it, but I did. Within a week it started to smell.

A small air cell may help identify freshness, but not necessarily so. If I stored eggs in my cellar the air cells would stay just like "as gathered" yet the eggs would be less viable.

One thing I've noticed a lot of people have a lot more time than I do . rainy days and sick days I'm glued to this thread today is both . but still need to go out and do chickens . so pry myself away and see if I can get it done .
Get to feeling better. The parade may be bumped up a little. I'm going to have some free time around 11:30, but will take a while to put it together. The vote right now is 4-0, so people are flying in

Started a small clutch in the incubator on 8/29; no water, temp about 99 according to two thermometers, RH unknown 'cause I had no hygrometer. Hygrometer/thermometer arrived two days ago; RH was only 30% & air cells were about the size of a dime, so I added some water. RH went up to 60% overnight, but temp dropped to 95.6. Been adjusting it ever since. RH has been holding steady @ 60% for last 12 hrs. Managed to get the temp. back up to 97.6 so far...this is day 13.

I'm open to suggestions at this point. Afraid to take water out for fear of a drastic temp. spike. Inclined to leave well enough alone @ be prepared for a delayed hatch.
Any ideas?
What they all said. Get that humidity down! Temp was fine before you added water. What temp water did you add? Best when adding water to be sure it's around 100*.

Now that's some impressive chicken math!

Well of course, I want a parade!!! Of course, I wished more had hatched. So I will defer to the crowd......
YES!!!

What is the most important thing about the eggs you choose for the incubator?
Clean, good shells, fresh, good size. And I choose eggs that are relatively round to continue my (so far) successful gender selection criteria. If I was pushed up to the wall and wanting to preserve some genetic material, I'd set pullet eggs. Otherwise, I'd wait until eggs approach normal size for the breed.

So happy for you! Why don't you go get them? I drove almost 3 hours each way.
You are going to get some good silkies eventually!

I have not thrown away my clears yet. I think I'll try to blow some out. Thanks for mentioning that!
Ditto that. Weekend coming. Good time for a nice little road trip!!!

agree with WalnutHill, @kwhites634

Calibration is key, high humidity and low temps = bad hatch.

I run all my bators at 100.5 to 101 until lockdown, I have cleaner hatches and you can look in the shell for proof of great incubation, you will not have any goop in the shells and the veining/membrane is clear light pink in the shell after hatch, chicks will not have any umbilical goop remaining, just the tiny string at hatch!! I decrease to 99.5 and first pip I lower to 98-99. Never look at humidity as a number, its all about weight loss in the eggs, be weighing or watching air cells, it will vary from home to home, your current climate, bator to bator, type fowl, etc. No one can tell you what humidity you need, only you know what you started with as far as weight loss, and what you have at 7 10 14 weeks!

Since I bought this last set of eggs, I set them all, but I did notice that some of the ones that didn't survive and a couple of the clears had badly shaped pointy ends.
No loss. They would have been roos anyways!!!
