She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Okayyyy. I was born in Utica, (New Hartford actually but my mom thought the hospital was still in Utica until she got my birth certificate). I grew up a little more north than your top line up past Watertown...lol I lived in the Syracuse area for 12 years after I graduated college. That's a big area to look at. As for the carry laws...yeah, ever since the "safe act" carriers in this state have not been very happy. I don't own a gun, so I don't know all it entails but I know "repeal the safe act" signs are very prominent....lol Between the weather, the taxes and the laws, the state sucks....lol Windchill factor making temps 30 and 40 below aren't fun...lol

I would say more like 4 ish??? My ex was stationed at Green Haven Correctional and he had a 6 hour drive to get back up here? That was Dutchess county I think...You're close to that aren't you?
UGHHH so I will do some more research in the SC GA states then. Anyone from SC ?
Hubs and I love hunting fishing, raising our 2nd batch of kids, our springers and chickens of course!
AND WE ENJOY BEING HERMITS! anotherwords, I am not a town girl, I dont like to see neighbors or their houses ;)

Never ask for broody's... I swear it's the worst, most contagious disease out there... up to 3 Silkies and 2 Am's again...

LOL when I ask I only get serama who cant sit on many standards! those hens are always brooding!

The secret ingredient is dill pickle juice
LMAO
I live in Northern Michigan and love it here. Thankfully we have open carry. Important especially during the spring when I am out mushroom hunting. You NEVER know what you will run into.
There is a livestock auction every Wednesday here. Never been but I want to go.
I am not sure about Michigan, never really looked into it. please tell me more about the state? at least its "out of the towns" areas lol
I think I saw that show live free or die and the shroom hunters were in Michigan

Dill pickle juice? Will have to look into that one!

Mollymoochers?
Dont go to Md, they have stricter gun laws than anybody! Might as well not even own one if you live in that state!

DONT WORRY I wont go to MD! we were just at point look out, and drove that side of the bay, and there is no way I could deal with it! I cant get into detail but anyone from that area will know what I am talking about

Got the coop 90% done. Ordered the trim & soffits today and should be at the store by Friday. Got the exterior & interior walls done. Next is to seal the walls & floors, build the nesting boxes & roosts, figure out how to lay it all out and get the poop door. I want to put it on a timer. Oh and cant forget the fencing for the run.
sweet! love the color! hubs is painting our livingroom as I said the color earlier but the color match looks more like a gray than blue I was going for, but it works, at least lowes had the buy two for one yesterday, one day only! SOLD I should have bought more paint for the other rooms!

Fall is the best time to hunt in Georgia. Today we found a dozen HUGE Chanterelles in the woods behind our house. My daughter picked them and fed them to the bachelors. There were probably hundreds of visible mushies back there. Dozens of russula, some enormous bolatus, all kinds of coral fungi, and even some slime molds. If I wasn't so preoccupied with the chickens and the chirruns, I would have taken so many pics.

What do you hunt?

Pretty avatar. Most of the chicks from our first hatch are BA mixes, too. I can't wait to see what they look like when grown. Feel free to post pics.

YUM!!!! how is hunting in GA and I assume its one of the good fishing states, hubs says to ask around about tornado areas in the lower states?

Love wild 'shrooms... and being able to carry here, lol... TN's laws are the least strict on owning/carrying/using I think... and prolly won't change anytime soon either... when our neighbors(OH's cousin, unfortunately) dogs got out and slaughtered our entire grow out pen, Sheriff point blank told me we can protect our property... PERIOD...
big_smile.png
Tell us more about TN, dad loves it there he takes his bassboat fishing once a year. Hunting I assume is good as well? taxes etc?

I hunt spring & summer. Mostly just morels, pheasant backs and I found my first set of oysters this year. I got a mushroom id book & a edible wild plants book. Not only do I hunt mushrooms but also plants. I am blessed to have a patch of ramps (wild leeks) on our property literally 30 feet from the house.
We only go for morels here thats all my grandfather taught me so I too dont trust eating stuff I have no clue about.

Drizzled all day yesterday, enough to screw up my plans. Now its starting to rain harder...
We've looked for morels before (mollymoochers 'round these parts lol) but mushrooms scare me because of so many being poisonous. I want to look for some ginseng this year.
ditto, I would love to stumble on some ginseng too. just one LOL

How is WV to live in? thats close enough to buy and travel until the one kid is out of school (she is 15.5) lol

I officially set my eggs!! And I have 4 eggs that look really healthy around day 12. I read somewhere that there are certain days you should not candle. I believe it was days 11-13 or around there. I can't remember for the life of me where it was that I read it. It's killing me. Anyone ever heard of certain days not being good for candling?
GO CHICKIES

Have you guys ever entered "Champion Row Virtual Poultry Show" on Facebook?  They have an on-line show every 3 months or so.  I sent in some pictures not knowing much about it, and it's been really fun watching the results come in and seeing pictures of the winners.  They had something like 2700 entries this time.

I just came across it today!

Thats one reason I haven't gone yet. Like going to the animal shelter and just looking.
Yes I love mushrooms. Gives me a reason to get some exercise after being indoors all winter. And I am surprised SC didn't comment to that lol.
Pickles are the best. Especially when you can your own. Its a lot of work but if you do it right they are better than store bought.
I

I'm going to try to make my own pickles next year. I grew cucumbers this year. So many I don't know what to do with them all. But they are not the right kind for pickles. What kind of seed is the best to grow your own?

I grew up in Metro Detroit, married a northern Michigan guy (grew up on a farm) and moved north. I love living here in the woods. Only barely see our neighbors in the winter. I have always lived in MI so I dont have anything to compare it to. We have lots of state land for all activities from hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, riding ATV/SXS and snowmobile. We have open carry laws and Right To Farm.

I've been making pickles for years with my grandma's recipe, but this year I started doing fermented pickles (cauliflower, carrots, celery, green beans, garlic, sweet peppers, and of course cucumbers). I will never go back to vinegar brined cukes!

I've never canned pickles, though my brother in law makes canned sweet pickles. Have any recipes to share? My favorites are garlic dill pickles.

I've lived in Michigan nearly my whole life. It is a beautiful state full of forest interspersed with farms once you get out of the Metro Detroit area. The other urban areas of Michigan are rather compact, you can be in the country just a few miles from downtown. Land and houses are cheap except for a few spots (and those from other metro areas would say we are still cheap), hunting and fishing are excellent. And yes, lots of morels, in fact there is a morel festival every year. And more waterfront property than any other state, I believe, with all of our lakes and rivers and Great Lakes frontage.

If you like woods and privacy you will find them.

I really, really want to go to an auction. But I've heard mixed things about them. My neighbor goes all the time and comes home with something to throw into his mix (that right there kinda scares me). But he did pick up 3 of the sweetest silkies I've ever met in my life. They run to me when they see me coming and jump right up on the side of the baby carriage. But I've heard a lot of people don't treat the animals so good and you end up feeling bad for all of them. So I don't know if I should go or not.
Well, eventually you have to drive down here and pick me up for when we go to stay with WV!

Mushroom hunting? Should I ask?
Sounds so good! I love pickles!!
He's beautiful!! And I'm glad you're taking care of her. It doesn't look so bad. That's one of my fears, getting a chick with scissor beak.
Lovely!! Looks awesome!!
LOL RIght....

Thanks! All the time & money spent it would of been WAY cheaper to buy a pre-fabed one for half the price!
Ad no where near as good I bet!

Yup. 11-14 and I still candle every night. There's no logic to me that the eggs are being turned yet candling is going to be the thing that negatively affects them. I do however stop turning my eggs now at the end of day 13 since I found the growth chart that lables day 14 as the approx day that they turn toward the fat end of the egg.
