She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

I saw this extremely, ridiculously bright LED light on the counter at the gas station tonight...and you all know what I was thinking!! I've had a hard time seeing in these new eggs because the shells are thick!! So I quickly shined this bad boy over them tonight, while I was turning and I have nice development in 10/12 eggs!!! So I can go to bed on a happy note! :bun
I told you this hatch would be STELLAR!! Lol. Ok, not yet, but I still bet it will be!!that's awesome :yesss:

OMG. Every time I see a flashlight I wonder how good it would be to candle eggs with!! We are insane aren't we????
YAY! That's awesome! Here's to a superb hatch!

Ron, that's the joy of experimenting. It never gets old. I've been a "what if" kind of person all of my life. It keeps every day fresh and new. Yes, next year, I could be singing a different tune. But, you can be assured that I will be posting my results, be they good or bad, and I will keep experimenting with this theory. But, I'll let the numbers speak for themselves. 3 hatches in a row have followed the same pattern. My last incubator hatch was 22/25 with one clear. And, you're right, my numbers are not statistically significant. I don't hatch huge numbers of chicks. Nor do I have a huge flock, or a giant incubator. I'm working with what I have. And, I'm encouraging others to add their data to mine. I'm happy to have more pullets in my coop, and less roos in my grow out pen.

These are my Silkies. Sorry it took me so long to post them, ive been trying for the last hour. They all turned out white but when they were younger 3 of them were darker.
They are cute!!!

So, I just had the most awesome visitor to our humble chicken infested place... gotta say I am very glad I stumbled across this thread and got to meet him...

Thank you very much, @BYC910 , it was a pleasure to meet you and you're always welcome at our place!!

That is cool!

@RavynFallen I'm jealous you got to meet! Hope you had a great time... Tell us more!
I was going to say, "Now you gotta tells us more about him...lol"

Lazy, I've been really curious about that egg theory and I can't wait til my chickens start laying eggs so I can test it out myself. I thought it was eggs that are almost perfectly oval instead of egg shaped were females and the egg shaped 1's were males. So its the round 1's, not the oval 1's, that are females?

My husband came home with new 125 lumen hunting flashlight the other night and the first thing I did was take it and candle my eggs, lol. I think we are insane, lol. And thank you, I love them to death, they make me so happy :)

Can you tell which of your hens are laying the rounder eggs?
No, I have too many to tell, but there are some eggs that are distinct to certain hens. When I had some of those, I'd set them beside each other and keep the ones that were less pointy, the ones that had a wider circumference at the middle than the others.

It's a theory that I'm putting to the test, and it's increased my pullet ratio from 40 to 60%. Will continue doing so, until I disprove it, in spite of the nay sayers who say there's no need to experiment. There's always room for a good experiment. Keeps life interesting. You'd ought to see the 22# hybrid Red Kuri/buttercup squash I grew! It was 22# massive looked like a orange buttercup with green stripes.

If you are into experiments, get a book on statistics and how to set up and evaluate experiments. As an example, the Study you read that said there was a slight difference in males hatched based on the shape of the egg should have said if it was a significant difference. It likely was not significant, which indicates that the difference was accounted for by chance, the rolling of the dice so to speak.

I had to do so much of that working on my Masters in Counseling.

A large random sample and controlling for variables and then listing constraining variables and etc. With smaller numbers, the differences have to be larger to show significance. It can be done but is harder.

The sample would have to be set up so that you were able to get pointy and round eggs from single hens and then see if the pointy eggs from that hen were male more than female(it has been my experience though that a hen will always lay a very similar egg). Also if round eggs from the same hen were more often pullets.

I am always happy to have any number of males hatch--They are very tasty! I have a freezer full from this last hatching season.

I won't divulge confidences, but he is a great guy! Brought us lumber shipping wrap we really need for shading pens, windbreaks and snow barrier. We sent him home with a very nice batch of various hatching eggs.
We probably coulda talked forever, and we did talk too much, lol. Very nice, straight forward good person. :)

I've had the pleasure of meeting several BYC folks when they've come to get chickens from me. Always enjoyed the opportunity. Wonderful people, every one of them. Have also swapped some garden produce in person as well. Joy to meet like minded people in person.
