She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

So if I cross these pullets:

With this roo:

I should get some laced chicks with dark heads and feathered feet possible

And with this roo:

They should also show lacing, but with more color. All his babies are white/black/brown, or Ameraucana type EE.

I love genetic mixing bowls!

First hatch this am around 8:30.  Second hatch just occurred about 45 mins to an hr.  I got the foot taped flat and cut in between the toes but I need to wait until my DH gets home so to trim it up.  I'd die if I cut a toe.  It is now putting weight on the leg and getting around with the bulky bandage.  I only saw one egg rocking and it was chirping yesterday and last night.  It was this second one to hatch.  Just like the first one this am I never saw a pip or a zip.  I will tap on this third egg.

:thumbsup great job with the chick booty. It's so nerve wrecking with their little toes, I know!! I always have my son help me.

I tapped the third egg and heard:( nothing.  This evening is day 21.  Should I candle or give it another day?

I would do both. Now that 2 hatched, I would without a doubt be candling that last egg!! Look for movement along where the air cell draws down around the chick. And if it's still alive give it another day.

Hangin' in there, Thanks.
Had a bit of a scare for a little bit today, though. The birds had been out foraging most of the day. About 4:00 I noticed they'd had enough & were all back in the run, except one hen. I counted beaks again...still came up short. I'd been outside most of the day myself, & hadn't heard any commotion, like something was after them, but I started looking around for possible clues, anyway. Wasn't long before I found the missing hen...locked up inside the live trap I have for coon & possum. She seemed perfectly at home. I'm surprised one of them hadn't found their way in there before now.

Oh my! I had something very similar happen to me today. Let the chickens out to free range around 4:30. By 6:15 they were standing at my back door, which means they are ready to go back (but they are soooo slow, they can't figure out how to go back into the run). I gathered them all up and counted "beaks" as you said, and was one short. ??? I knew I didn't hear any commotion or see any signs of a predator. I walked the whole property line and then re-counted. Couldn't figure it out. Checked the coop, which they NEVER go in by themselves and one little pullet was snuggled up like a ball in the corner!! I was so relieved!

So the power went out earlier for about 4 hours. Thankfully my husband's jump pack was here and fully charged and it has reagular wall type outlets so I plugged the bator in and it ran like a charm, disaster effectively averted :)

Thank god!! That great you were prepared! :)

Got home from soccer practice, and the light on the incubator was blinking. Panic averted after Googling (which of course brought me to BYC). It's supposed to do that

Temp is dead-on and steady

Whew!! What a relief! Something is working properly!! :gig

Well, it's a fast blink, and I thought it would stay on steady... Come to think of it, it blinks as fast as my crock pot does when the power's gone out and come back on (which doesn't happen often, nor for long--usually just long enough to mess all the clocks up (and thus the main alarm clocks are phone-based))

It's a proportional thermostat.

When the incubator is cool and initially heating up, the light will stay on steady. As it nears the set temperature, it will start to flash slowly. When it is very close, it will flash more rapidly. When it is at temp, it will pulse on and off as it turns the heat on and off to maintain temperature.

That is the "secret" of Brinsea and GQF. Proportional thermostats don't overshoot the desired temp, and they don't drop below the set temp, they hover right on target. The light just tells you about it. My GQF 1402 flashes now too (the old light was burned out)

When I said the temp was correct, I was thinking it was supposed to be at 100. Looking in the manual, it's supposed to be 101.3. Should I bother turning the control a teeny bit (since the eggs aren't due until Saturday, and I likely would be setting Sunday or Monday, depending on how things look, I'll have plenty of time to fiddle if needed) or is 1 degree worth worrying about with a Brinsea? When I calibrated with my fever thermometer, the Brinsea thermometer was about 3 tenths low, so getting it to display at 101 would be perfect.

OK, at the risk of sounding ignorant (hey, I'm a styrofoam bator gal) I thought all the Brinseas were forced air?

Yes, set to the incubator instructions. I had it tuned right, I wondered why you had to change it.

You don't need to wait days for stabalization, 15 minutes is plenty. I am recalibrating my GQF cabinet right now.
