I started to but I couldn't tell so I gave up. I'm not blind or anything but I just never see anything like the pictures and videos I see. Ex. I never see the big beautiful veins, can't really see the air sac until much later and even in hatching I never saw one pip or zip... just BOOM and they were climbing out of their shells.

I never really thought of all of that and so true.

Walmart sells a good flashlight with a cree bulb. Look for instructions for attaching a piece of pipe to it and making a very good candler for a low cost.

I'll say again, lol... my guess on the Hmong would be cockerel, but that Ogye I am 100% certain is a pullet...

I'll definitely watch for the preoccupied sideways glance, lol. I just can't decide what he's doing now, lol.

If he is imprinted, then I would say expect to have issues... I don't allow my roosters to imprint and am careful with my drakes as well... the issue with imprinted roosters or drakes in seeing you as part of their flock is that most decide at some point that you should submit to them as well... this is one of the big reasons behind all the stories you hear about how someone's favorite lap roo is now attacking them... :/

So... Question to those of you who use a carton for hatching those eggs with detached air cells, what do you mean when you say you cut the carton?
I've got bantam eggs in hatching and I'm in need of specifics regarding the carton. Last time I did it with full size eggs and did it with the cups cut away from the carton which resulted in the first chicks out of shell knocking everyone else over...
Tips are greatly appreciated.

O gees... what color options are there post hatch?  LOL... I think I might be going ORANGE:/   What color should their poop be at 1-2 days?  My two are have bright green and clear excrements.  I'm not real sure they are drinking on their own yet.  I've been dipping their beaks into the water. I see them trying to peck at the food but don't seem to be picking it up. I'm trying not to interfere but I'm worried.

If you are worried about a chick, look at their feet, toes, legs... very simple and first place you will see that there is any issues... if the toes, feet or legs start looking thin or skeletal like, then there is a reason to worry...

Eggy update!

All 14 of the American Bresse that i set are developing despite being very pourous. Im worried, i have to do some more research on what will happen to the embryo in pourous shells?

In addition to those 14, the seller gave me 2 isbars she has been great and i havent complained about them being pourous, the two isbars are also like this though:

I Filled the incubator UP! Set 48 total by finishing it up with my own mixed layers eggs. Pretty freakin excited that the whole tray i candled last night (on day 7), only One was early death! Much better genes than the duckies i last incubated! The other 23?! (Of that rack) Including All the Bresse and 2 Isbars?! were expecting quite a hatch. So OH built me a new brooder i painted it

Dont mind the photo bombin turkeys, i been tol yall theyre bad, spolit! In a non aggresive manner, please believe i wont have that!

And the calf... He started scouring two days ago an i think i nipped it n the butt but thats where ive been, runnin like a... Well you know take care!

May I ask how much you paid for shipping?  I just bought some Jubilee Orpington eggs and the breeder charged 20 + and add'l 10.95 if I wanted the box to be labeled FRAGILE.  I've not had any other breeders charge extra.  I didn't pay it and WOW... the box wasn't marked this end up, live embryos or NOTHING.  It was delivered on it's side in my mail box

Started the electrolytes and will give egg  yolks in a few days.  Thank you.

I use flat rate boxes, doesn't matter where in US or weight it is same price... Medium is 12.?? and Large is 18.?? so I just go with 15 for Med and 20 for Large...I do have to drive 12 mi into town too, lol, so I figure 2 bucks isn't a deal-breaker...

Oh yikes, that's crazy, $10.95 to take a sharpie and write on the box? I've shipped plenty of eggs, and that's literally all you do, there is no extra fee at the post office for bringing in a box marked fragile or anything like that. $20 plus is also crazy if it wasn't express. I live in VT and it costs me $15 to $16 to send a double boxed dozen of duck eggs, which are pretty darn heavy, all the way to Washington with priority shipping.

I agree, that is ridiculous... it would be cheaper for me to ship if I had a comp and printer, but I don't, so I just go with flat rate boxes... and only time I ever use Express is in a time crunch...

Did you candle the eggs to see what condition they are in?

You really cannot tell what the eggs are going to do by looking at the box.

Marking fragile and this side up will not change much given the way eggs are shipped--It is mostly mechanical and the machines do not know which end is up and cannot read  fragile so do not handle the box differently.

No, doesn't help for the machines, but they do load and unlaod the trucks by hand so the conscientious mail handlers do watch out for those... our PO is great and they do handle marked boxes better...

CONGRATULATIONS on the winning record!  That's awesome.

I had one shipper wrap the eggs individually in a paper towel and then use bubble wrap.  I'm not sure what the paper towel was for but it was on tight and difficult to get off.

When storing eggs you keep them a bit cooler than room temp, so if it is really warm out when the eggs are shipped they might get some condensation on the egg... some shippers feel that the papertowel helps keep the moisture off the eggs...


Oh, yeah... had a great day at the auction with K and bought a coop for my Ohiki... he's got it and a couple of dinky hutches strapped to the back of his truck for me... what an amazing and wonderful friend!!!!

I have an IncuBright and a Brinsea high intensity ovascope. One thing I noticed I'm doing wrong is that I'm not using anything as a small hole to narrow the light. Do you think that makes a big enough difference? I really like the ovascope because I don't have to hold and turn the egg.

WOW, I just made the adapter using the inside of a tape roll and a washer for the disc. It makes a huge difference. Thank you! My ovascope came with different 'discs' for the light. I'm going to use them now, lol.

O no, sorry to hear that. I am mixing up electrolytes now. May I ask why you don't hatch them in cartons? This is only my second go at this and I laid the last ones on their side because videos I watched it seemed to take a lot more effort to get out of the shell. I'm on the fence about which way to go with this bunch.

I really prefer laying them down. I've never hatched upright, despite many people telling me too. Especially because I do shipped eggs. I think it's closer to the natural way they would hatch and I've heard it's easier to spot a wrong-end or wrong side pipper. Plus, in my incubator I'd have to do individual cartons and I know they would all get knocked over anyway. I love watching them zip that egg laying down!!

I've paid anywhere from $5 to $50! There was a thread a few months ago that certain usps offices were going to be charging an additional fee for any packages marked "fragile". Don't know if that was true or starting to go into effect? Also, some breeders here on byc prefer to have their packages NOT marked at all. They feel that the post handles better when there is no indication of eggs or fragile material in the box. I say half a dozen to one, 6 to the other...(or however that saying goes!). Shipped eggs is a gamble all the way around as far as the actual shipping part is concerned.

We won! Blue Lightning was undefeated this season! Now for unpacking pics... One corner got banged a bit, but you'd never know it from the inside. The egg from that corner had a wobbly aircell, but that's the extent of the damage. The other couple of loose aircells may have been near it--I only took note of the one exactly in the corner. Nice and tightly packed, big end up and marked with date and breed (though if I can't tell Marans and Sulmtaler eggs apart... ) 2 strips of bubble wrap at 90 degrees from each other. I untaped the first one, then realized that I could carefully slide the eggs out, which was much easier, with less chance of the egg taking a fast half foot trip... Layer of shavings and bubble wrap on the bottom as well as the top. Reinforced single box. Eggs for the incubator and for Frieda! I'll divide them tomorrow after the post-rest candle. Maybe I'll even be able to see the aircells in the ones Ravyn gathered last

Update on mine, the air cells look MUCH better now so I'm going to add water in the AM, some still need to grow a tad bit more, but all the embryos are still growing and look really good. It looks like some of the cells are starting to draw down also. Can't wait to see what I get from this bunch. I have 11 left so I'm hoping all 11 will make it but I'm not counting on it cause I don't want to be disappointed if they dont. But on this 1.

I'm here for you the whole hatch!! Really rooting for 11!!

So very true... I laughed cuz that was something I would do... give me something super complicated and difficult to master and I am good... make it simple and easy and my brain falls out... :/

I have had the hardest time getting the tubing going the correct way on the birnsea humidity pump. It can only go two ways after all....but I still manage to mess it up!
