Agreed.  Rye makes for a great winter lawn, wheat would be better in the run for the chickens.

I'm going to make some grazing frames since the crew has now eliminated all growing things from the run.  They have a few flakes of alfalfa in there now to tear apart as they like, and still get all the kitchen scraps.  (They ate the last of the garden trimmings the other day.)  I have alfalfa seeds for sprouting, maybe I'll pick up some wheat as well.

If I was sprouting alfalfa it wouldn't make it out to the chooks! :lau

Look how cute

Adorable! :love

Cute little SDW man too... ;)

Will wheat grow in the shade? She's under a lot of trees

Absolutely! It needs no direct light to sprout... I rinse and soak the seeds overnight then spread it all out in trays and leave it in our spare room... blinds are closed up so doesn't get much light in there... it can get several inches tall by the end of the week, but I usually feed mine out before then...

That's below Columbia. We are in upstate, the land of red clay

Winter rye for something that will come up quick and hold over the winter. Put out Kentucky 31 fescue with it, and the fescue will have a good root base by next spring, and it will take over when the rye dies. Right now is the perfect time to plant
Not bad for someone who lives in a desert :gig
LOL. Lived in So Cal for 50 years married to a landscape contractor. You can garden year round there.

Last year, I did a mix of Wheat, Barley, and BOSS.  I also picked up a 4# bag of Plot Strike, and sprouted that for them, but the germination wasn't the best with that.  They did enjoy it, and I figured that the seeds that didn't germinate would still have a lot of nutrient.

I'm converting my garden to Back to Eden.  Also tossing wood chips in the run, along with all the garden debris, old hay, any thing organic that I can get my hands on.  Hope to have a nice thick layer built up within the next 6 - 8 months.  After that's established, I may make some grazing frames for the following winter.

I just blew a bunch of leaves into my runs. They are bare as can be.
What's Back to Eden?

November 3rd in Michigan and we both played hooky from work this afternoon to take a 100 mile trip on the motorcycles to enjoy the last of the fall weather and fall colors. It was warm, upper 60s, sunny and breezy, cooling off after dark with a strong chance of deer. Beautiful ride...

Check it out:

Thank you. Interesting stuff, I think I can adapt to alot of that.

Sweet!

I don't know if you had time to watch the entire video, but he incorporates chickens into his grand plan!

I paused at quite a ways in, and then it wouldn't start back where I was, so I'll restart it tomorrow on the big computer and see if I can get back to my spot, or just let it play again. Haven't gotten to the chickens yet, but I could hear them in the background

Just candled and they are all still kickin

Woohoo :thumbsup
