She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

All that can be done without seeing it in some way is guessing games... and it may change the times it will come back, they're smart and usually don't come when you expect... lock those babies up, get the camera recording, set traps and hotwire the place... good luck, I've been there too many times... :/
My hubby found him. He's got a burrow about 20 feet behind the run that was hidden pretty well. The trail of feathers led right to it. That's why we never saw anything, he was coming from the blind side of the run, the camera faces the run from the opposite side of where the fox came in at and there's some tall weeds around there. It's a grey fox so he blends in really well. We're going to find all the entrances to the burrow and block them all off but 1 and then flush him out.

Go get 'em... don't give up til you do... and secure everything afterwards... weather is cooling and predators will be looking for food to pack on the pounds...

That's exactly what I thought. He was trying to put on weight for the winter. Yeah, his @$$ is mine, we'll have him soon. I'll let y'all know when we get him. Thanks for all the info guys, y'all are awesome!

Personally, I totally forgot about trying to talk to SC into a parade since he was hanging out. I feel it should be 85% for home grown/local eggs and I don't know about shipped. If you get 50% shipped that's supposed to be good so what do people think is considered "Parade worthy" for shipped eggs. If SC doesn't want to continue with them, that's fine, but if we are going to continue the "parades" I want it to be agreed upon and fair for everyone. Not everybody has a fool proof bator. The other thing is broody hatches. I think broody hatches are a different category. I don't mind doing parades for incubator hatches, but I'd rather not get into broody hatches. Parade stats from lockdown rate-all agreed?

Another thing- rounding. If I do parades I will be rounding down not up. If 4.5 is the number needed that's saying that 4 have to hatch-not 5. (The .5 can be considered the growth that made it alive to lockdown and didn't make it.)

Silly question. .. what is a parade?

The chicks have arrived - after I called the 1 800 number, waited on hold forever, got someone, told them they were going to die if I didn't get them today, and the person opened up some sort of thing to find them. However, it is not happy news :( The seller did all she could - they had two heat packs and a cup of grogel. The heat packs had gone cold, since it has been over 72 hours since they were shipped. The cup of grogel was flipped upside down with all the grogel still in it, so the chicks couldn't eat it. This tells me that their box was flipped around at one point.

Unfortunately most of them were DOA. I'm trying to bring a couple back from the brink of death, but they're looking rough. One died as I was trying to revive them already.

Im so sorry about your chicks.

I'm still going to hotwire everything and lock them up at night though. Like y'all said, where there's 1 there's bound to be more.

I told DH I want to bury razor wire under the fencing.

chicks are so hard to get a good picture of. Does the chick on the right look like it has a crooked toe? The inner toe of the left foot?

There are other factors pointing towards relocation, as well--this is an absolutely gorgeous area, but we miss 4 seasons (not that Sacramento generally has a real winter, but 3 seasons is more than 2). This is a small town. Mr. P, who is in the ministry, and is director of Reach Out Ministries, once helped another ministry for a few years, and helped them get their non-profit status. He hasn't worked with them for almost 7 years now, which is about twice as long as he worked with them. He still gets asked how things are at that other ministry. True, it's not a major thing, but even I find it irritating. Mr. P's parents live here. They stop by all. The. Time. And they expect us to drop whatever we are doing when they do. And they inspect things. And must know everything we are doing. Sometimes it feels like we are their teenage children, too inexperienced to know anything. I'm 41, Mr P will be 38 in less than a week and a half. Our 18th anniversary was last July. My parents are dead, so Mr. P has no inlaw issues

Sometimes Mr. P has travel opportunities with the ministry--Sacramento is a lot easier to get to and from (especially from). If we move, when we can get our own place again (or if we manage to find a house to rent that the landlord would allow chickens), a lot of the folks on the Northern California thread have breeds I want (quite a few of them I learned about on that thread

) and are reasonable distances from Sacto, as opposed to everyone being 4+ hours away, one way.

Now, I wonder how many people posted since I started this, since the dinner timer went off halfway through the above?

Amy, the past church, as well as the inlaw issues are reason enough to want to move. Make it far enough that the in-laws can't just hop in the car and be on your doorstep for an impromptu! They need a lesson in diplomacy with married children. Perhaps you and hubby could embarrass the day lights out of them some time???

Poor little babies. I've lost whole shipments in USPS where the few that were still kicking did not pull through. That's one reason I've gotten into hatching my own mutt chickens and my own turkeys and ordering hatching eggs. Losing the potential of an egg is less than losing a live chick or poult. However that also limits what breeds and varieties I can find.
That's one of my biggest driving factors for breeding my own birds also.

Can a fox jump or climb over a 4 foot fence?
Yes. And grey fox can even climb trees. They're very agile.

We'Re planning on putting up an electrified wire around the outside of the run about a foot off the ground and about six inches from the run all the way around. Do y'all think that'll work?
I'd go with the first one 4" to the ground, and put 2 more above that one. My dad has even suggested running them horizontally, one close to the fence, and the second one about a foot out at the same height.

My hubby found him. He's got a burrow about 20 feet behind the run that was hidden pretty well. The trail of feathers led right to it. Pictures please, when you get him.

Possibly.

It's not crooked (as in bent along its length) so it may just be the way it is standing. You could make a pipe cleaner brace if you want to try to straighten it, personally I wouldn't worry about it.

The chick is walking fine, I just wasn't sure. Right now they are yellow fluff balls. Have you ever sexed by wing feathers? I am thinking 1 boy & 2 girls.

Wing sexing can only be done with specific breeds or crosses, supposedly. But... if you want to play with it, female wing primaries have a staggered look. (!i!i!i!i) While male primaries are a bit delayed without the staggering (iiiii) This has to be done within the first 36 hours. Go to the Sex Linked information thread for information re: sex linking and feather sexing.
