She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

:hugs :( sorry your looking at that, i know its tough. Thats pretty swollen, id say its bumble alrite, and pretty far along too
That's what I thought. I don't know how I didn't see it when I picked them up. I just got them Sunday. He had them in a cage when I got there and he took them out and put them in the box I brought so I couldn't see much. I emailed the guy I got them from and he said he didn't notice any of them having a bad foot. I don't know how he could've missed it. As soon as I saw them out and walking around I noticed it. I doesn't seem to bother her but I'm not letting it get any worse. Would penicillin help it or will I have to do surgery?

Definitely bumblefoot. It's caused by a common Staph bacteria, but when left untreated for long it can infect the bone or go systemic, and those are terminal. If you just bought them, I'd go back to the seller with that one if possible, at least to get a refund. That one has been infected for a long time.

Treatment: long soaks in warm Epsom salt water (just the foot), scrubbing with a soft bristle brush, removal and disposal of the "kernel" of hardened pus, dressing with Blue-Kote or iodine, and clean, deep bedding during the healing period.

Any antibiotic rated for use on Staphylococcus aureus will be acceptable. In severe cases I've injected it into the infected area, but oral dosing is just fine. Tylan is good,

Ok, I can get Tylan at TSC. I really don't want to bring her back to him, if he let it get that bad he must not look at them much. He'd probably just dispose of her if i brough her back. I'd rather keep her and give her a chance to recover. Poor thing.

Geesh, you are one lucky girl!! I'd love to hatch and then just hand over the chicks...and get paid for it!! Awesome, awesome, awesome!!
I don't know, Megan. I see lots of chickens like that at my neighbors but I've never dealt with it personally. I would do a search on bumble foot and read through the threads. Or post in the emergency/sickness section. It's called something like that. Good luck! :hugs

:) thanks! I feel pretty lucky :) couldnt have come this far without you guys though!!!

I absolutly love how informative you are. :sick i dont even want to think about this but here goes nuthin...

I've seen lots of sites about bumblefoot surgery so I guess I better study up. This is going to be hard.

Hard indeed :hugs hit me up anytime, i can at least send hugs :( i really feel bad for you, i had taken in a turkey hen becuz she wouldnt stop crying at me, i couldnt take it! Said hen was infected to the bone and i couldnt heal her, it highly upset me. I turned her over with orders of termination and he still hasnt done anything. Im not sure which route was Exactly Right, but i decided i couldnt risk my own flock. That mess is Highly contagious and you need to be extream in biosecurity if your going to keep her. I used the ESalt, bluecote and iodine treatment just like your reading, like walnut recommended... Also like ahe recommended? If i were you, id take her back. Gluck :(

I totally missed this yesterday! I'm dealing with a similar issue with one of my new silkies. I made a thread in the egg laying section. She was In the nest box yesterday pushing for hours! I was pretty worried. She does feel a little swollen but I haven't taken the leap with the glove yet, since she did get out of the box eventually and looked normal. I was told to see if she's standing like a penguin. Wasn't to sure what that meant. But yours looks a little that way. How is she doing? Has she laid eggs yet before? I have to observe mine today and I may message you if I decide to go in!!
Very excited! :fl for a great hatch!
I plan on hatching come February and every month there after. I will also participate and keep detailed records!

She is still acting like that... but she is pooping. So leads me to believe not egg bound. I just don't understand! How is yours doing? ?? She has never laid before! So.....yeah I might check her again today. Her little hip bones are really narrow. I can barely get one pointer finger between the bones. I also gave her some tums to help speed it along. But I am watching her.

Crap, I didn't even think about how contagious it is but being staph that makes perfect sense. What would I need to do to keep it from spreading if I did keep her? I can't let it take out my whole flock.

The more eggstream the better! Nothing that comes in contact with her should come into contact with Anyone in your flock. That means changing clothes, espcially shoes, wearing gloves, always fresh and new... Any cleaning utensils must be bleached sterile... I could go on and on... Basically Everything had to be kept sep and sterilized before changing over. She has walked around on your coop floor? :/ im so so sorry bae

It was a nightmare, i looked up the pics, if you dont wanna see a critter in pain scroll fast :hit

How far did you travel to get her?  Easiest thing is to return her, and expect full refund.  Agreed, she's been infected for a long time.  Hope you're keeping the rest in quarantine.
It wasn't far. Her and the other 4 hens are in their own seperate run and coop well away from the rest of my birds. Probably about 50 feet from them.
