I'm jealous! I'll make lasagna for Christmas though.
I'm thinking about doing Lasagna next Thanksgiving. A couple years back I went on strike and did lasagna for Thanksgiving....lol Dad and I already talked about it and we aren't "hosting" Thanksgiving any more here. I said unless the siblings want to come and stay the night and put on Thanksgiving dinner it isn't happening. Dad and I don't like fresh cooked turkey (I do deli meat though,) and we have ham for Christmas and Easter, so "Italian" for Thanksgiving appeals to me. I don't do roasts or bbq crap either. I'm one of those people that are going to die because I like my processed foods.

You should definitely do it! We always have turkey or ham too but it's a small plate in comparison to the pasta. My grandmother is notorious for making like 5 pounds of bake ziti every year and everyone takes home enough left overs to last a week. But that means no cooking for me, so I'm happy about that! When I was a kid, it kinda bugged me that we didn't have a "normal" thanksgiving but I love it now!!

Quick question...I was *considering* doing the New Years Eve hatch along. You have to set eggs on Dec. 11. Can I gather eggs now? Or would that be too far away? I don't even know if they are fertile but there's been lots of mating going on and instead of cracking them, I'm thinking of maybe just setting them to give them a chance.

You can, most people aren't comfortable setting more than a week or 10 day old tops. The older the egg (especially past 2 weeks) the lower the hatch rate.

Maybe open a couple, just to check?

Ruby, how many eggs are you collecting/week right now? Would you be hatching eggs from all of your girls, or do you want to hatch eggs from specific girls? How many chicks do you actually want to hatch? What has been your hatching % in past hatches? Answer these ?'s and it will help you to decide when to start collecting eggs. You could always collect a week's worth of eggs, and then as you collect eggs after that, you could then start to eat the oldest eggs. That way, when you reach set date, you'll have your freshest eggs already collected. When I collect for hatching, I like to put the date laid on the top.

X2

Always date them and just collect and see what you get... if you don't set them all, eat what's left... besides, some days you might get an egg a bit more porous or just doesn't look as nice as the others... I'll collect up, then pick through for what I want... personally, I'll set a bit older egg than one that is as uniform in shape, size or shell quality, so I don't just pass up on the older ones...
But we also don't refrigerate our eating eggs either, so we have more options that way...
Go with your gut, and what you want... :)
