She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

X2!
But consider replacing your batteries! Sometimes that makes a big difference!

Should be day 7, yes (maybe day 6 since I set them last monday? I can't get that day one starts after 24 hours figured out in my brain).

I think I'll pick up another flashlight--the one I brought is a little larger for my hand to fit around, and the one the teacher lent me she said the batteries were getting low.

I'll candle them all this afternoon I think and maybe the other ones will have something, or maybe the flashlight will show me more. THe yolk did seem to move around, which in my last failed hatch it didn't even do that!! So I'm still hopefully. There is one very dark egg (the roo was a maren and I think he said he had some maren hens in his flock) so I'll probably just have to leave that one.

My fingers are still crossed for at least some to hatch!! Still have a chance for 2 more hatches before school is out, but I really want to the kids to see some chicks grow.

Wish I could donate... tried and it did not go well... sucks cuz it turns out I'm O- and RH- :/ Set a nice batch for Easter...

Wow, Ravyn that is a HUGE set!! Awesome! Good luck!
Looks like I'm incubating at 42% humidity . I'm thinking about putting a counter off a hay baler in to keep up with turning :idunno turner is on the same side It was when I went to bed last night  I'm not sure how many times it turns in a 24 hr. period .
Another really big set!! Good luck!!
Here's the ?'s of the week. How many of you sell day old chicks? And if so, do you have any luck selling barn yard mixes? What kind of issues have you run into when selling chicks? I love to hatch. But my flock size is pretty good now. Culling a few this weekend. Of course I'll be raising up some replacement stock this season, but want to be able to sell the ones I don't keep.
I've been selling chicks like crazy. Not mixes though, silkie chicks. I have been having people contact me before the set and let me know how many chicks they want. My hatches have been very consistent for the last several hatches, so I just add a couple more eggs, then the number they requested. I contact them around day 14 and then again at lockdown. Hatching on Thursdays has been good because most people want to pick up on the weekend. This way the chicks are all hatched and eating and drinking good by pickup. I've got a set going right now for someone that wanted chicks a didn't mind waiting 21 days.
Hmmmm... kinda like this??

Middle one is our Crash ducks 1st successful hatch! :celebrate
Are you serious?!?!?! Cutest picture ever!! Ravyn, I am soooo excited!!!! I can't wait to hatch baby duckies!! :ya
Ok, we are getting light snow today! Augh! I thought we were past this! Anyhow, good morning!
Amy, loved all the pics of the chickens! Didn't want to quote them or this post would take up a whole page!! Guess what? We're supposed to hit 75 Wednesday!! Record breaking high! I wish I could send some of the warm weather your way! :hugs
Good morning everyone! I'm feeling like I'm a cursed hatcher today. After a 100% failed hatch a few weeks ago we tried again. Last monday I set 7 eggs from a local in my child's classroom. I had them for 3 days, turned a few times each day and kept in a cool place in my house until I set them. Using a brinsea mini advance. I candled a few of them today (the lightest ones) when I dropped by daughter off and I'm not seeing any veining or anything. Well, I see the air sac and a yolk, that's it. Is it too early to see anything, or am I losing eggs again?! :barnie This is stressful, and I don't want to let these kids down again :(
Wv had a great idea with changing the batteries. Led flashlights work the best for me and now I seem to find them for sale everywhere. I have quite the collection! Lol. But, yes, by day 6/7 you should definitely see veins. I'm thinking there's a fertility issue if they are clear. Update after you candle again.

Oh and I forgot to tell you guys that my very first broody hen is on day 20. I was completely hands off with her and her eggs. She literally never got off the nest, so I never candled the eggs. I just hope she gets some babies! I'm very excited for her. How long should I wait to move her and the babies out to the coop run? Sorry for the bad pic, I put her into "lockdown" yesterday.

A Silkie? I didn't know you had a broody. I may have suggested letting her hatch in the pen just to see what happens. Mine never have any issues hatching in the pen, but I have had issues reintegrating one I took out. Everyone's flock is different, so I don't know when would be the best time to put them back in

Yes, a silkie! My original plan was that when I had a broody I would just let them hatch in the coop and stay with the others. But this hen decided on building her nest in the run, in -17 degree temps. She went broody during the coldest week of the year. I didn't think the eggs would have much of a chance in temps like that and I didn't want to let her stay outside the coop, in the run with those temps either. So I caved and moved her into my laundry room /basement. It stays pretty warm down there because of the furnace and dryer always running. That's why I put the top of the cage on her because there's lots of junk down there and I didn't want the chicks to get lost or hurt. So I agree, whole heartedly with what you're saying but I had to improvise due to the weather. That's also why I'm concerned about moving them back out.

Then by April you will be dealing with this :gig

Oh no!! So true, though!!! :lau
I've heard it's contagious, which is another reason I moved her. Didn't want all my layers deciding to go broody before spring gets here!

I didn't even think about your weather, I understand now.
You are working with better birds, so I understand the problems broodies create in your breeding. Since mine are just pet quality, I just let them do their thing. I would have a different approach with the AMs and BCM

I totally forgot about her! I hope she does well and can't wait to see what she gives you!
