she is moving around good today and the navel looks awesome. I think she is going to make it. The thrid one was dead in the shell. So I got 2 out of 3 for my first duck hatch. I have 22 duck eggs coming up and some royal palm turkey eggs. Praying. .
I want to thank everyone who helped me during my duck hatch crisis, I appreciate it. And my two little ducks, who are thriving and doing well, appreciate it too.
So... I am a little upset right now. Of the 12 lavender orpington eggs that I set 10 days ago, only 2 are developing. I guess I must have gotten unlucky with my egg choice, and picked some of the newer layer's eggs. But the sebright and OEGB eggs look great! Lost one sebright, blood ring on day 8.
My question is, I know we have talked about differences between infertile and unviable. Is it possible to tell the difference, once incubation has started?
I did have a friend just set a dozen of my LO eggs, 8 developed and all 8 hatched. I think she got them set before the newer pullets started laying. I'm stopping by Rural King on my way home today to buy another incubator to use as a hatcher. Was going to repair my old one, but I don't really know what's wrong with it, and I think it would just be easier (and as economical) to buy another one.
It's not reliable to check after incubating, but you can try it... yolks will break really easy and sometimes the blastoderm is too degraded to tell... but it wouldn't hurt to try... they're your own eggs so your choice, lol... being as they weren't shipped though, and how good your bator is, sounds like fertility... they weren't old at all either, right?
Sorry for the low development rate...![]()
Not old at all! All under 4 days laid. I'm guessing just newer layers. The odd thing is some look darker when candled and some are clearly "clear".... but with the 2, I can definitely see movement and the embryo. Still can't even see much blood vessels though. I hate these shells!![]()
I think I'll just set more tonight and go from there. Flippin staggered hatch...
Sorry, hon...![]()
Want my Marans and blue eggs??![]()
Before I collect to set, I take a days worth of eggs and crack them all to check fertility first... much quicker and easier to see who's getting the love and who isn't...![]()

Good job!!! You did great!!
Very happy to help... how are the other eggs looking? What day are they on? Humidity? Are you misting or sponging the duck eggs? Just want to help you give them the best chance possible...![]()
fine... make fun of my poor wittle pink eggs.

Teasing of course, but I swear even my mutt brown eggs were easier! I'll crack some of the dirtier eggs tonight, ones I wouldn't set, and check them out.
