And; we went to the Zoo while hubby was off on Thursday. They had Mandarin Ducks!
Last night when I closed up I noticed one of the young ones that my bantam hatched last October was gone and tonight it was one of my barred rocks. Thing is I did not let them out today and she is not one of the ones that gets out on her own. She's a good sized bird, round and heavy. There was no unusual ruckus from the coop and none of the others looked upset anytime. I found the first pile of feathers about 5-6 yards from the run. No blood, no body, just a feather trail. Followed as far as I could up the hill into the trees, but nothing.Those eggs look so pretty! I like how you put all the same colors next to each other.
I love Mandarin ducks. They are so beautiful. I actually thought about hatching them but I went to a show and there were a bunch there and let me tell you, they are wild! I tried to touch one (ok, I tried to touch a bunch of them) and they were not people friendly. They are gorgeous to look at but I think I would feel bad trying to keep them as domestics.

That's was my initial thought tonight, but the way the feathers went up through the trees, I'm thinking land animal. After the banty got taken I thought maybe a stray cat I see out here every once in a great while, but after tonight, I can't see a cat take a hen as big as my barred rock was. I'm going to sit out for a while tomorrow evening and see if I can spot anything.
I already told my nephew he needs to bring me a gun. Never thought I'd be able to until tonight. Let's just hope if I get a gun in my hands I'm a natural. Never shot anything more than pellet and paint gun.M.O. sounds like fox.Time for some target practice, me thinks. I have no problem shooting a varmint that is killing my animals. Not a kind heart here!
