She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Why do you hate raising cornish crosses? I am just curious.

Compared to standard chicken breeds or heritage turkeys, Cornish crosses consume large quantities of feed and waste much of it as it passes through their system. They also drink copiously and poop excessively. Their wet manure attracts flies and leads to much more frequent coop cleanouts.

If I raised them on pasture, I'd probably like them better...and lose more.

I'd like to go back and cross Dark Cornish and Dorking if I can find good stock.

For meat birds or layers. I hate raising Cornish cross (though I do love eating them). If I can raise a nice dual purpose I'd rather do that.
They have not been as bad as I have heard since we have them in an open area. They can free range, but they don't really. We are going to try freedom rangers next. They take an extra 20 days to get to the same size as a cornish at the size we want them.

We did lose 2 out of 15 to heart attack and they are not a pretty site since they sit all day to the point they have no breast feathers.

I like you

Read up on dry aging. It sounds gross...but a couple of days in the fridge does WONDERS for even older birds. Waiting until rigor mortis breaks, then freezing the bird, then thawing when ready to eat also tenderizes as the freezing process breaks down cells.

Be sure to DRY age, hang the bird so no fluids sit inside or underneath it.
We are going to refrigerate for 3 days before freezing, but can't really hang that many birds anywhere cool enough.

They are the F1 Hybrid of chickens, and they will never catch up to their genetics if big business has its way. They are a science experiment gone terribly wrong (as far as the health of the bird) yet terribly profitable
I have never raised them, and couldn't just because of that reason. Not saying that I have a problem with anyone else raising them, I'm sure they are great to eat, but for myself I don't think I could raise a chicken that would die if I didn't kill it

I think I'm going to try a Delaware over a New Hampshire hen when I get more land. Folks used to do that before the cornish X.

So I should point out that up here, in Canada, our hatcheries have a limited selection. We can definitely buy "dual-purpose", which in my book means healthy genetics, and we can buy "meat birds". which means they might have a heart attack cause they grow too fast. Heritage birds have to be imported up here, and that means delivered to Buffalo and someone drives down there to pic them up cause typically they can't be shipped across the border.

So, please take my country's limitations into consideration when you think about what you do, I wish I could buy and sell in America.

I just wanted to update real quick. The charcoal/carbon moisture control stuff I picked up at the dollar store took my inside incubator humidity from 55% to 25%! I am so pleased. I only used a small cup of the stuff. Probably over a dozen cups in the actual container. Loving that it only cost $1 and worked amazing!

that's so awesome I'll go and get some tomorrow and try it here now post that picture again so I don't have to go find it the other thing is daily up dates on how long it lasts.

Maybe I'll try dry aging in the fall - it will probably take me that long to get up the nerve to process my first bird....................

Those sound like interesting mixes, and would give nice meat birds. I'll probably have some extra Ameraucana over Marans cockerels eventually, or some Orloff culls, but they grow so slow it's ridiculous - 2 years to fully mature! (Anything I process will be for personal consumption only.)

LOL I gathered that... very funny!

I agree with much of that!... I love Jim Carrey in Liar, Liar, and I actually like the dumb and dumber movies, but so many of his, I just cannot watch! I can laugh at stupid humor for only so long. I might giggle, but then I'm like "how stupid!" I quit watching SNL many years ago! And Bill Engvall is one of my absolute favs! But Rodney Carrington? He makes me cry laughing so hard... I'd love to meet that man!

Thanks for all the replies to that question everyone! Since I'm planning to be gone for a few days, I was just thinking it would probably be ok if they happen to run out for a few hours, before my neighbor gets to fill them up (if it happens) I don't have feed inside the coops, so they don't eat once they go to "bed", but its still out in the run, where they always have access to it. And AmyPaperlady... I have the same luck with the dog of mine that won't be travelling with us. I can fill his bowls and there will still be food left when we return! Its like he saves it up, just in case we don't come back, he's stretching it out for the long haul! lol He'll keep my flock safe while we are gone.
I don't think I have ever seen Rodney Carrington.

Another one I love!!

I'm not going to smack you for that. I'm going to give the "he said" to your "she said". I don't know if you guys can tell or not

, but I have been a huge comedy fan all my life. I saw Robin Williams "A Night at the Met" when I was a kid, and knew right then that he was my hero. Some people hate him, but the guy was phenomenal. Such a quick wit, and the way his mind worked reminded me of myself. I was truly sad when his life ended the way it did.
I like some stupid comedies, if they are smart

. SNL is stupid and smart. Tina Fey is a genius. I can quote Monty Python's "The Holy Grail" until people just walk away

MAD TV had some seriously funny characters, and the comedians on that show didn't get nearly the credit they deserved.
I love political satire and improv, Ryan Stiles on "Who's Line" is another that I would consider a genius, but 99% of people don't know who he is.
The Blue Collar guys are funny, but 15 years of the same old rehashed redneck stuff. I'm with WV, if you want to see a smart, funny redneck, see Rodney Carrington.
We all had our things that we wanted to get away from growing up, and comedy was my defense mechanism. I have always dealt with things by laughing at them. That's not always a good thing, but it sure beats crying

So now you guys know why you have to deal with this insanity

Love Robin Williams. I literally blatted when the news broke about him. I still get teary eyed when I see things with him in it. Loved Who's Line too. I am going to have to check out Rodney. I'm going to start thinking of you as Chandler now....sorry, but you went and done it now...lol

Hope you have a great time off! You deserve it. :)

I soak my run down every other day, then the chickens dig down through the leaves and rest on the damp ground. Maybe you could put some col damp soil in your boxes? I need to move my smaller chicks outside, but I don't want them to bake in the shed - so they come back in in the afternoons. I have a fan in there, but it's still over 90 inside with the door wide open!

That is so cool. I hope he lets you know how he does raising and showing them!

My EEs are half Cuckoo Marans and they are huge! would definitely make a good meal if you put the in the crockpot for a couple of days...... (They are 2 years old)
Thank you. :)

In other news: my chickens have started using the nesting box again. Not 100%, but more often than not now. I did buy some Oyster shell today that I am going to put out there to see if that aids my egg eater, if not we're gonna try the mustard egg. And my eye feels 100% better. Yay!!! LOL

Rodney Carrington is very funny, and a lot more "blue" than the Blue Comedy guys. You will like him
I can get teary eyed over Robin. "Hook" makes me cry
Chandler? From Friends?
